Tascam 122 MkII speed problem

Just been reading in another thread about the unreliability of the 122 MkII machines...

Ok, I have one here that is running at what appears to be half normal speed.

Anyone struck this problem before or know of the solution? I have the service manual here and could sit and work it through
but there's nothing like someone else's shortcut to provide a little relief!

Is this a consistant speed problem? If so, is the pitch control engaged?

Seems to me I've replaced the motor (& its control board) on a couple of them that wouldn't keep speed. Also shot-gunned the electolytics in the speed control circuit.

A worn idler assembly will also cause speed problems. That's why I asked the original poster about the pitch control activation. Those are the two simpiler problems to look at, first.

No, this is with the pitch control out. If I engage it, I can vary the speed even slower, and in the other direction it comes up to what I would guess to be about 3/4 normal play speed.

How does the machine sound, mechanically? Do you hear grinding noises when fast winding tapes in either direction? If so, you likely have a worn idler assembly.

Mechanically it sounds sweet. I am confident it's an electronic issue - more than likely the motor drive board.

Obviously it's a common problem with these machines.

Beats me, as I have never seen such a problem with that deck. I have however seen three different decks of that model have their IA's go bad.
