TBN in NYC

I read something in a TBN newsletter showing who I believe was the TBN founder,
Paul Crouch and his grandson standing in front of a building in a picture that
had the caption 'get ready, get ready, get ready!' as TBN will begin expansion
of its' station in New York City. are they planning to buy an existing station,
or go digital-wise into the Big Apple with its signal covering NYC? will it be
analog or digital I wonder?

The only station I can find after digging is WTBY from Poughkeepsie on 54 analog and 27 digital. The digital signal from either the licensed site or the STA site doesn't cover the city very well, but they are apparently on Dish Network.

You're right there. Paul and Jan Crouch have always touted WTBY as their New York City station, even though it's in Poughkeepsie. TBN is well known for using the bigger city identity for some of their stations which are in suburban or "rimshot" cities, like Atlanta (WHSG-63 Monroe, GA).

Well, TBN could buy Long Island's WLNY-55 or New Jersey's WMBC-63, both of which are on nearly all of the cable systems in the New York TV market.

Or maybe TBN could be planning to "expand" their New York operations by building a studio so that some TBN religious programs would originate from the New York area.

WPXN Channel 31?

God, I hope not.
We don't need these hateful scam artists to show Satan's Infomercials to a wider audience.
WLNY has some decent stuff on it, and I rather watch Korean game shows on WMBC than some con artist taking the Lord's name in vain.

That would be the least worst option.
______________

They're also known for putting on low powered and class A stations to fill in the gaps of the rimshot signals. They did this in downtown Cincinnati to fill in the areas where WKOI-TV, a station whose tower is about 30 miles north of downtown, doesn't penetrate very well. On a side note, WKOI-TV is licensed to Richmond, Indiana, a city 65 miles north of downtown Cincinnati.

Does anyone know why TBN originally chose to put full-power stations so far away from the cities they're attempting to serve?

Because no channels were available closer. 54 wasn't available for use in NYC or any close-in suburbs - too close to 55 on Long Island and (possibly) 54 in Baltimore. Why they didn't pick up the channel 63 or 66 allotments in Jersey I don't know -- probably they simply weren't willing to pay what the owners wanted. (I thought channel 63 was carrying some TBN programming anyway?) (not being in the area, maybe those NJ channels don't cover the city any better than 54?)

They also have a 35 about 60 miles outside Chicago; that channel could not be used in the city itself because of 32 and 38 nor in any closer suburbs because of 35 in Grand Rapids.

In general they seem to locate much closer when channel assignments permit.

At least here in the Nashville market they have taken advantage of a more open channel and the looser city-of-license coverage rules for digital to locate their DTV transmitter much closer to the city than was permitted for their analog. Pax has done likewise, with their Nashville DTV transmitter some 35 miles west of the analog. (and some 70 miles or more from the city of license!)

That would be WWTO TV 35 La Salle. They have a 5,000,000 watt signal and when they first signed on in 1986 They iendtified them selves as WWTO TV 35 La Salle-Chicago. The last time I saw them, I have dish network so I have not seen the channle in quite a while, they were identifiiing themselves as WWTO TV 35 La SAlle Peru Ottawa. They do have several low power repeaters I think even a couple in the Chicago area. They also have one in Bloomington, Peoria, and I believe Sterling Illinois. There big tower and strong signal plays havoc with WMBD TV 31 In Peoria. People in my area who get channle 31 OTA have been complaining for years about the terrible signal on channle 31 but there is nothing anyone in this area can do about it. I rmember when they first signed on someone was so mad about it they shot the antenna.

I believe at one time the station was a satilitte (sp?) station of a Peoria network affilate, until they were sold. Funny how it is now in the Chicago market.
______________

Channel 35 was once WEEQ-TV, a satellite of Peoria's NBC affiliate WEEK-TV Ch. 25. I believe they went off the air sometime in the late '70s or early '80s. LaSalle is about 80 miles SW of Chicago, about halfway between it and Peoria.

There are a few TBN Class-A/translator stations in the Chicago area - Ch. 22 Arlington Heights (NW suburb). Ch. 24 Aurora (W suburb), Ch. 57 Elgin (NW suburb), and Ch. 68 Palatine (actually located on the Sears Tower in downtown Chicago).

Nothing for NYC, though, other than WTBY Poughkeepsie.
