TBS BASEBALL:

did tbs baseball "invent" the green screen behind
home plate ? admits, knows how it is done,
and even I'm fooled at times; also, it
loooks veeeery REAL and convincing!(sp?) !!!

Let me see if I can find a gibberish-to-English translation device.

The poster is asking if TBS created the green screen advertisement located behind home plate.... Incase your not aware.. its the big rotating ad behind home plate that looks like its in the stadium, but really its a green screen controlled by the tv network showing the game.. tbs/espn/fox, etc.

Was this created by TBS, because it looks very real at times.

FOX used it first in baseball, but they and ESPN have been using it for five or six years now, at least. It's based on the same technology as the 1st and 10 line, which has been in use longer than that.

TBS didn't start using until their postseason coverage two years ago. When they did exclusively Braves games, they used traditional ads.

I believe TBS coined another practice used on baseball telecasts: superimposing their logo, or the final shot of a montage of clips, onto the shot of the video board at the stadium, making it look like the board is actually showing TBS's broadcast.
Others do this, too, but I'm pretty sure TBS did it first, also in the 2007 playoffs.

Thank you, michiana_media for being professional.
As I have a severe difficulty with typing words from
my thoughts to a hard copy, i personally thank you...

I was fooled more than once, tuning into a game, and thought
it was the real billboard...until I saw the replay and it was green!

I only have seen football use the stadium's jumbo board, showing
replays, portions of the broadcast (etc) but that you can see is 'trimmed'
and, can tell is fake...those billboards, look REAL ! great concept.

yes, i also thought the 1st/10 line was a laser...haha.

Weren't some of the networks using this technology to cover up ads for cigarettes in stadiums and replacing them with other ads as well?

It's definitely obvious that this technology is being used when the screen is showing an ad for other shows on the particular network involved.

it is a 'classic case' of *obvious* after you know what is being done;
or exactly how the technology works.

as mentioned, i was at least doing a double take,
and wondering what/how is the 1st and ten line was working
(at first)...

so,
what is the next thing ? any guesses.

You'll notice as well that the screen only works when being shot by certain cameras, noteably in baseball, the center field camera. When a right or left field based camera, or a replay is shown, the screen appears blank.

I believe there was some early controversy as when the visiting teams television team utilized the screen, it would show local ads, not from the home teams businesses, but the visiting team. Example: A New York based business appearing on the screen at Turner Field.

(look, its freakin 5 44 am, and I cant sleep. Sorry if this doesn't translate, lol)

Well, we do know that TBS is the pioneers of creating the talking promo bug that "pauses" whatever program is on to plug the show... Remember this lovely post?
