TBS calls off Game 4 of The ALCS

The weather looked so fine in Detroit tonight as The Tigers try to clean sweep The Yankees over at Comerica. So Anyway, They have filled up Prime Time with Seinfeld, Family Guy & The Big Bang Theory reruns. In other words, tonight was ruined.

First, TBS can't do a thing; Major League Baseball made the call to postpone the game. The only thing TBS can do is plug in rain delay programming.

Second, being in Wisconsin 300 miles from Detroit, it was a miserable rainstorm currently right above Detroit that we experienced this morning that would keep it in delay to 1am right now if it was being played. They made the right call after the mess Fox made out of the NLCS tonight; nobody wants to have to be watching (or as Derek Jeter knew too well late Saturday evening sadly, playing) a game at 2 in the morning.

And I'd argue Fox ruined the night more. A bizarre rain delay lineup consisting of sitcom repeats sandwiched between a reduced episode of The X Factor suddenly cut off towards the end to air The Mindy Project solely to sync to the top of the hour? A rescheduling to Tuesday night which will again screw up any momentum X Factor did have like last year?

Fox had this happen last year. Why pull the 'air the game on a weekday so we can get our show in' strategy if it hasn't worked at all? TBS had a good backup plan of expendable sitcoms, while Fox failed deeply. Hope MLB enjoys this for the next eight years again and again ::).

On the Bright side, The Cardinals defeated The Giants 3-1 after sitting out 3 hours in the rain. The Ballgame started out at 3PM CT; then bottom half of the 7th, Rain came down so hard FOX had to turn over its programming to its affilliates. and they had to call off "The X Factor" and pushed it back to Thursday.

When ESPN ball games are in a rain delay, they just plug in one of their 19 sister networks. :D

The MLB could have started the AL Game in the Afternoon then their wouldn't have been a postpone.

I think that there is an unwritten rule that Yankees playoff games must be in prime time. :D

Game 4 will be (weather permitting of course) at 4:07PM Eastern today.

Forecast for Detroit today is a 94% chance of rain.

By MLB rules, the decision on whether to play or not rests with the home club's management
up until the first pitch (for the playoffs the Commissioner may also have some say, I'm not sure).

Once the game is underway that decision rests entirely with the umpires.

From the Official Baseball Rules (PDF file linked):

"4.01(e) As soon as the home team’s batting order is handed to the umpire-in-chief the umpires are in charge of the playing field and from that moment the umpire-in-chief shall have sole authority to determine when a game shall be called, suspended or resumed on account of weather or the condition of the playing field. The umpire-in-chief shall not call the game until at least 30 minutes after he has suspended play. The umpire-in-chief may continue the suspension so long as he believes there is any chance to resume play."

From the comments at the end of that rule:

"The umpire-in-chief shall at all times try to complete a game. His authority to resume play following one or more suspensions of as much as 30 minutes each shall be absolute and he shall terminate a game only when there appears to be no possibility of completing it.

The Major Leagues have determined that Rule 4.01(e) does not apply to any Division Series, League Championship Series or World Series games or for any additional Major League championship season game played to break a tie."

The above is not elaborated on, but I believe that it's Der Kommissar Himself, Kennesaw Molehill Selig, that has been making the decisions on postseason rain delays, with input from the umpires and the teams (but not the networks - no, never... ;D ).

I wished ESPN would carry some of the MLB Postseason. Their coverage is much better than TBS. I think TBS & FOX has already re-upped their deals for 8 more seasons after the 2013 season. Furthermore, TBS would be carrying the last 13 weeks of the MLB season after the All-Star Week starting in the year 2014.

I like the way the NLCS did it. Play the game, rain delay, start again. Thats how it works in the regular season, thats the way it should be in the post season

Wow, the only rain falling now is the tears of Yankee fans. :'(

It'll be hard to do when you allow three home runs to a utility player in a single game... ::)

No one could ever really give me a good reason for a rain delay, when football is played in the rain (or worse).

Even as a kid in Southern California, the few times we had a rain delayed little league game seemed silly, compared to the few times I played football in the rain.

Granted, my little league park essentially sat in a flood control channel, so anything over 1" of rain rendered it useless for a week, but surely MLB parks have better drainage.

Sandoval is not a Bench Player he's the starting 3B who hit the 3 Home Runs. Also ESPN has the best coverage at the World Series because MLB Network leaves people in the Studio like last night post game Greg,Billy,Mike and they should have also been live but at least Chris Rose got to work MLB Tonight.
