TBS CANCELS HOUSE OF PAYNE AFTER 172 EPISODES

Here's another show I never got into or watched. TBS will continue with new episodes of
Meet The Browns and a new Tyler Perry show titled For Better Or Worse.

TBS, once stood for The Braves' Station, night as well just rename it Tyler's Broadcasting Service. After all, Every Movie & Sitcom Tyler Perry produced-Have all aim towards Blacks & African-Americans. Heck, TBS has now joined B.E.T. & TVOne as one of the most powerful names in Black Television.

TBS seems to have lost it's identity.

Is it a black network?
Is it a sports network?
Is it a comedy network?
Is it a talk-show network?

IS IT A MESS?

It's a nationwide version of an independent television station, which is ironically the concept TBS was originated from...

That seems like an odd remark given the path most cable networks are going down now - which is generic. Is A&E still all about "arts and entertainment?" Don't make me laugh. Is AMC still all about classic films? Is Hallmark Channel all about high-quality uplifting family drama? Please. I don't recall Chuck Norris starring in any Hallmark Hall of Fame films. All these channels have to fill massive amounts of air-time and that involves infomercials and stripping off-network reruns of varying quality to attract mass audience

In the original Ted Turner era, TBS was what Kilamanjero indicated - a satellite version of an local independent station - only sillier. Anybody remember Bill Tush - the guy who would do the TBS news briefs wearing a clown nose, or an arrow through his head? The first series they bankrolled was Saved by the Bell - not exactly a quality show, unless you were an 80s era teenager.

I think TBS deserves some credit for helping to bankrollthe Perry comedies, and the Conan and Lopez shows.

I think TBS has remained true to their roots more so than other cable channels as Lkeller pointed out. They are still largely devoted to comedy, with an odd sports event or comedy/drama here or there, but there are still a "full-service" network for lack of a better term.

TBS and TNT have both invested heavily in original programming, and I agree this should be commended when most channels are playing the umpteenth repeat of "Roseanne" or some other 80s sitcom. Not that those channels don't have their place in the spectrum of channels, but I think its great that Time Warner has invested in a range of programs from two! late night talk shows to sitcoms featuring minorities to original dramas, etc.

I'm interested to see the math you did to figure that one night a week dedicated to African-American sitcoms (produced by Tyler Perry AND Ice Cube), plus the occasional telecasts of Tyler Perry movies = 'all of TBS is for black people'.

Don't forget about those other shows on tbs that are geared toward an African-American audience, like Conan and non-stop reruns of Seinfeld & Raymond. ;)

If you understood what Turner Broadcasting was doing with its channels, you'd see that TBS is 'identified' fairly well. The company's biggest entertainment channels reside in a basic content wheelhouse that follows what one would find on network and basic cable TV: TNT houses 'dramatic' material in hour long dramas and movies. TBS houses comedy, including sitcoms and late night talk fare. truTV, while keeping the daytime courtroom coverage of its predecessor, is establishing its place as a home for reality shows. All with Turner Sports programming (NBA, MLB, NASCAR, PGA golf, and now NCAA March Madness) spread across several channels instead of one dedicated sports channel.

Stop the needless pigeonholing.

And also Home Improvement, The Office, My Name Is Earl, Family Guy, American Dad, Yes Dear, The King of Queens, and that bastion of classic Black comedy, Friends. Not to forget recent news that TBS will soon be the basic cable home of The Big Bang Theory.

BET is totally going down.

I'm pretty sure Lamar Odom as a guest on Lopez Tonight a few months back. Obviously, TBS is giving BET a run for their money in terms of Black entertainment!

I dont see what the big deal is. TBS is making a new Tyler Perry show who cares. Everytime a network puts on a african american show here comes the comments. Goes to show you how this country has really change. I dont see any black shows on the 4 networks. The CW is not a network. Despite Tyler Perry shows and movies being criticize I give him credit for opening his own studio and putting people to work. Hes doing his own thing let the man do what he wants.

As far a BET goes nice to see some new sitcoms besides stupid reality shows and rap music videos from the past years.

People may remember an African-American sitcom ruled the ratings on NBC for a large portion of the 80's and a little of the 90's before FOX moved "The Simpsons" to Thursday nights... then again, that seems like so long ago...

The BET "new sitcoms" comment reminds me of sister network VH1's ad campaign here in New York for their new reality shows. The tagline appears to be "more new shows". Translation: "More new cheap reality garbage." ::)

The difference is those BET "new sitcoms" aren't coonery and minstrel shows like those VH-1 reality shows like "Flava of Love", "I Love New York", "Basketball Wives", that mess with Chad Johnson, or Terrel Owens bullsh*t of a reality show. I could sit and watch those shows on BET and not want to say, "Oh look, more coonery is on TV to reaffirm black stereotypes..." ::)
