TBS Making Hollow Claim?

At my job at Wal-Mart, I'll see TBS run an ad several times an hour for Tyler Perry's House Of Payne. That's all well and good. However, here's what irritates me to no end: The ad starts by flashing the graphics "Cable TV's #1 rated sitcom of all time!". What exactly are they basing that on? I tend not to believe it. ::)

They are saying that of all the ORIGINAL FIRST RUN sitcoms on a BASIC cable network, "Tyler Perry" is the highest rated overall.

This means you discount all things like "Sex In The City," "Brothers," "It's Gary Shandling's Show," and all the other original comedies on HBO, Showtime or any other higher than basic tiered cable channel.

Also excluded are programs like dramas or sitcoms running in reruns like "Family Guy." This would also exclude things like "You Can't Do That On Television" which aired in Canada over the air (not a great example since it wasn't really a sitcom but you get the idea)

So that pretty much leaves what? The original TBS sitcoms like "Down To Earth" (which was pretty good). I imagine this would exclude shows like "Sponge Bob," which are not really sitcoms.

So what's left? I don't have cable so I don't know. Aren't there a couple of shows on the Disney Channel?

Sort of reminds me of the old 50's commercials that claimed "4 out of 5 doctors agree.." Of course what they weren't telling you was that these "doctors" just happened to be PhDs of English or History or Sociology!

What about "Hannah Montana"? That has to be better rated than Tyler Perry (who I have never even heard of before this thread), and it is an original first run series on a basic cable network.

Marc, I work at Wal-Mart and I hate the Hannah character too. Also, her show wouldn't count in this case since Disney is not an ad-supported cable channel.

Hannah Montana wouldn't be considered a sitcom; it would be a children's show.

It's not a children's show. It's targeted audience are TEENS and TWEENS. *GAG* She can't sing. I wish she would just disappear. (Just as long as my boss from Walmart doesn't see this board).

I give Hannah Montana ( or Miley Cyrus ) a year , two tops before she disappears. Then maybe about ten years later she'll be back in some form, who knows.

Kinda like Joey Lawrence. Years ago he was the big thing among teenage girls. Today from what I heard he is getting popular again..among gay men for his "bear" shaved head look LOL

Even though Joey isn't gay, at least I don't think he is. LOL

No..she won't disappear, she'll turn into the latest 20-something honey who will drink too much, screw too much, be seen running around without panties and generally making a nuiscence of herself, and will become constant fodder for People, E News Tonite and the TV Guide Channel!

Comedy Central has several original comedy series, most of them coming from the revolving door that is Wednesdays at 10:30 after "South Park".

Of course, in this instance, does a "sitcom" per se require a laugh track?

I think it's an odd claim to begin with, but to answer your question - no, a sitcom wouldn't need a laugh track. The Simpsons is definately a sitcom and it has no laugh track.
