TBS, TNT To Shill Beer Within Shows

Given the current orientation of our federal government, I don't suppose it will be long until the Nanny State
brings down the hammer on this one.

My Boys typically involves a lot of beer drinking scenes at bars and poker games anyhow. What brand of beer
they drink is irrelevant. Why not make a few extra bucks if the offer is out there?

Paid product placement on TV shows has been around for the last several years -- some of it subtle, while others were blatant ("Extreme Makeover Home Edition" comes to mind). As I recall, the FCC and FTC gave their approval, as long as the paid sponsors were identified in the program (generally the closing credits before the copyright).

Yeah, right! I guess Bush's family-friendly FCC didn't do enough to harm television. Apparently, the conservative, family values party has a double-standard in which beer is fine as long as it's shown late at night on cable.

Do we want to start a poll here? How long until some FCC bureaucrat proposes a rule, or an egotistical member of Congress throws a bill in the hopper, proposing to regulate alcohol product placement on television? My guess would be inside of one year.

Back to the days where radio commercials were part of the show.

George Burns and Gracie Allen Show (radio)

Geroge) I'm too busy to talk now Bill,
Bill Goodwin) But George...
George) Run along Bill
Bill) You'll never run a long bill if you use Maxwell House Coffee. Why it costs just pennies more than....

Gracie) I'll turn out the lights
Harry Von Zell) I'm a-scared
Gracie) Of being alone with me?
Harry) No, I'm afraid in the dark I won't be able to find my Bird's Eye Frozen Chop Suey dinners.

Jack Benny) I'll be on your show George
George) That'd be swell Jack
Jack) And you won't even have to pay me. I'll do it for Amident
George) Wonderful how many tubes do you want.
Jack) Tubes? I meant the whole company

Gracie) Sit down Jack and have a cup of Maxwell House Coffee
Bill) You know Jack, Maxwell House costs just pennies more than the other leading brands
Jack) If you two are gonna get commerical, why don't we all have a Lucky and feel our level best
