TBS: VERY FUNNY LACK OF ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING?

Does anyone here think that TBS need more original programming?

What I've been noticing lately is that TNT has plenty of original programming, like The Closer, Falling Skies, Franklin & Bash, HawthoRNe, Leverage, Memphis Beat, Men of a Certain Age, to name a few; yet TBS falls behind, only offering Conan, Lopez Tonight, the Tyler Perry shows and Are We There Yet?. Turner obviously has the money to develop new programming, why don't they take advantage and start producing their own content instead of just buying syndicated rights?

You are aware that TNT and TBS are owned by the same corporation (Time Warner), right? They're essentially different divisions of the same corporation. Given that, it is probably a programming decision that original scripted dramatic programming will run mostly on TNT, while TBS sticks mostly with comedy - scripted and variety (Conan, Lopez).

Gee, maybe they feel two hours of originals weeknights plus the scripted comedies are currently the best deployment of resources for the comedy side, given the off network comedies generally have more shelf life than dramas.

TBS tried other produced shows but they didnt fare well in ratings. My Boys was funny but only 3 seasons during the summer ughhhhhhhhhhhhh but a good show. Glory Days first episode was funny but shortly after it fell off. House of Payne is ending and Tyler Perry is starting a new show later this year. Sad enough TBS programing is more entertaining than anything on The CW aka Lifetime 2

In the programming realm of things, TNT seems almost like a major over the air broadcast network, and tbs comes across almost like an old school independent UHF channel given the amount of reruns they show (keep in mind its WTBS roots). I think they are scheduled like that on purpose and complement each other well.

Appropriate that Franklin & Bash was mentioned--I remember reading somewhere that show wasoriginally destined for TBS. I guess programmers decided the show would be a better fit on TNT, but if you've watched the show you know it relies upon dialogue meant for laughs.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the classic "10 Items Or Less" in this thread yet.

Very clearly this is a branding decision. The have focused on the development of drama
series for TNT. The original comedy nowadays is all on CNN.

I was about to mention that! The show was on at odd times, so I had to watch it on demand, but season 2 was killer! So sad they cancelled it.

Well, they did fire Rick Sanchez and get Larry King to retire...

TBS has tried original programming. (see the Tyler Perry stuff mentioned above)
It really doesn't matter whether they have any original stuff or not. They are doing well. That's all that matters.
They do have baseball. I suppose that could be considered original programming.

From what I heard, F&B was suppose to air on TBS, but got moved after the failure of Glory Daze. I thought Glory Daze was very funny, and enjoyed the show. I cringe at another Tyler Perry show.

Glory Daze was overhyped and just not "that" funny as they made it sound through the promos. Plus, being an hour long seemed like a really awkward format for TV comedy, the joke can only run on so long.

On a mention about basic cable comedies, a great original FX comedy I've been enjoying lately is Louie, definitely not your cookie cutter type of comedy show, Louis C.K. does an amazing job writing, editing, acting and producing it. Plus, the ratings for the show last week were above par! Definitely showing other basic cable channels that people are interested in watching edgy, different comedies.

The fact that TBS used a very fast text scroll to promote it during its regular programming helped me make up my mind not to watch it. (In this case, when I say "classic," I'm being facetious... should have put one of these ;D on my previous post...)
