Tech Student Complains About Lubbock Radio

I think the writer fails to mention some of the good stations out here. For example, I think KLLL is a great radio station to listen to out here -- sometimes even better than the country I can get in Dallas.

I know many on here are in professional radio so I just wanted to see what all of you thought about this opinion article.
 
First off, this is just some Tech student complaining about Lubbock. If he would have worked harder in school, maybe he would have been able to get into another school. Secondly, his complaints are nothing new. Third, his rant just turns into an advertisement for KFMP. If this guy is hoping for a gig writing for Rolling Stone, he might want to give that dream up. The only thing he will be writing for would be the Thrifty Nickel.
 
Perhaps the author's remarks are best responded to by using the DT's own message board. However, I will say that the he makes no logical argument. His whole premise is that he can't hear the music "he likes" and therefore, it’s bad radio. That's not how it works. Radio is a business and music tastes are subjective. What is a bad song to me may be great music to someone else.

Based on that, the rest of his article is very weak. For example, he's moaning that Kiss and Mix don't play 90's tunes. Why should they? It's 2009. That music is almost 10 years old, and Mix and Kiss are Top 40 radio stations. The listeners who these stations cater to want to hear the latest buzz, and don't care about a stale Will Smith tune from 1997. He also failed to notice that Mix and Stars both play music from the 80s and 90s during the weekend and periodically during the day, so this music is indeed available.

If Ben thinks this is a bad time for radio in Lubbock, I would tend to disagree. He should have been here 8 years ago, when every station was gutted without any concern for quality. And, based on what I've read, Lubbock is in better shape now than some much bigger markets. That’s not to say things are great here but certainly much better. Ben also has the option to listen to any station he wants using a Blackberry or an iPhone, not to mention Satellite radio, as well as the various mp3 players and crossfading iPods that are available.

About the only thing I DO agree with him with are Bob and Tom being on at night. Their show plays NO music at all, and there is no place in Lubbock to hear a good classic rock tune, unless you count KFMX (which the author mysteriously neglects in his article) or perhaps Kool 98. But that said, I do not think he has made much of a persuasive argument.
 
Well that does it. I WAS thinking about getting back into radio but this kid has changed my mind. I'm glad he was able to share with us his many years of experience. :(
