TECHGATE and Local Radio...

Just curious...

I am not in town for all of the TECH shenanigans... so I would like to ask... if anyone knows... how are the two local sports stations, radio that is, handling this? The reason I ask, is because of the Holidays and usually that is when most if not all LIVE radio folks take time off. So, was it being talked about or was it a matter of it being talked about but being talked about days after the fact?

Just curious....

Also... I would be really curious to hear how Double T is covering all this? Are they being neutral?

Ramar with double TT was all over it, as they should have been, in fact they even did simo's on 950. a terriffic job. they walked the line on keeping the Tech administration happy- hope it was enough.

what is sad is THEY CAN do it when they TRY]

Both stations, TT104.3 and Ryan1349 have been very fair handed about it. There has been no glazing over about the situation, and neither station took sides. The only observation I have made is that there has been some lobbying for Ruffin on 104.3, but that's about it.
As for 1340, Hyatt got a early end to his vacation!

Both stations have been pretty fair the days since. I was really surprised though that 1340 was still in some national show when the news broke last week. I think it was a fill in for Jim Rome, I flipped over there to see how they were covering it. Some host I hadn't heard before started taking calls locally later in the afternoon before Ryan Hyatt came on I believe at 2. KFYO also had an old news report during Rush Limbaugh after the firing.

104.3 was pretty much continuous coverage Wednesday, including different reporters including Jeff Klotzman at the courthouse. I'll remember exactly where I was on the loop when Chris Snead was on the phone reporting he was fired a little bit before Noon. They also played Ruffin McNeil live from San Antonio during his press conference and also had Leach's attorney. That whole cluster has fallen well behind in other situations but lately they've been on top of breaking news, from Leach to even the snowstorm a few weeks ago.

Real question is how long does the level of coverage actually last? It's understandable if any of the stations didn't have something last week. Like you said, it's the holidays and nowadays the probably means just closing up shop and it's really not the fault of the programmers, just the ownership.

I scanned up and down the dial during the Noon hour Wednesday. A few music stations were even discussing it. I believe 96.3 and I think 93.7 were a couple I heard, just out of curiousity if the riots had started yet!

In my opinion...Double T's getting alot of flack for "riding the fine line" they have to because they answer to Tech ultimately. So their hands have been tied during this whole deal and the outrage the town is feeling can't be really expressed on their station. 1340 though has really dropped the ball because they CAN do all the "Tech Bashing/Leach Loving" they want.....but haven't.

Actually the most representative "reporting" and "soundboard" coverage I've heard is like you said on KLLL. I've been surprised...cuz it's not what they do. I doubt they even have a news department. Check out their website and everything...they've covered it better than anybody. And they even gave away a shed!

Says alot about "Sports Radio" in this town and the boys covering it. All their "breaking news" reports came from their TV affiliate.

KLLL has been a surprising player in all this. Hats off to them...it's like the KLLL of the days of old, back when they did have a news staff and everything else imaginable. They've done a good job on their morning show this past week.

Today 104.3 did a great job. I just happened to be listening to ESPN radio a little before 2 when they came on with Robert Giovanneti and they broke the news and took calls through the afternoon. I didn't see them favoring anyone today. They had early callers who said this is the worst decision. Those callers have no clue of college football beyond Lubbock. Many people sound pretty happy about Tuberville. Casey Cowan has become a great host, calling things as he sees em.

I was glad to hear them calling out the university for waiting so long to make a decision. They also had some national writers who cover the Big 12 and college football on with their analysis. I think this is going to be a good move for Texas Tech, but who really knows. 1340 was late on Leach being fired and they had a football game on today, so they couldn't do anything. I was curious if 790 was going to have Chad Hasty on tonight, but it sounds like some rookies who haven't hosted a show before so I just turned it off.
