Technical/EAS question

Hi folks -

I know I've been out of the biz full-time for about five years now, but I was wondering something:

In listening to a Southern NH station today - they performed an EAS test, with just the tones. Liner, tones, liner, and back to music. No message saying it was a test (or not). Is that the new way to do EAS or is this station not up to snuff?

Yup, that's exactly how the RWT (Required Weekly Test) is supposed to work.

Gotcha! Old bastard returning to lurking mode...remembering days of EBS tests! I think I still have the darned script memorized.

;)

The liner didn't say "This is a test of the emergency alert system"? It is usually proceeded by at least that on most stations.

When WRKO does the test they do have a recording of Dana Hersey explaining what it is.

Years ago on WMWM we'd do a manual test and have a cart. When we heard the words "this is only a test"
we'd go over to the (remote) transmitter and hit a red button which emitted a 23 sec. long beep. The cart (which of course we didn't stop, it had a 23 sec pause) then got back to the end of the announcement
about the test. With EAS of course for automatic tests it pre-empts the music, etc.

We were required to spend a few thousand bucks on the equipment, or else, and had to beg the
college to fund it...

The Hersey one on WRKO says at the end "This concludes...the Emergency Alert test."

On many stations it is, but that's not required by law.

(I think most stations that announce their tests do so so confused listeners don't call up asking what those noise bursts are...)

I once worked at a station that used to (many years ago) run the intro with the copy modified: "This station in involuntary cooperation..."
Nobody ever commented on it, but I chuckled every time I ran it.
