What's the deal with 98.7 in Nashville and 98.9 WANT? I was thinking 98.7 at night used to be WAMB, but that's now on Way's old 99.3 in Donelson if I'm not mistaken. Radio-Locator has WANT with a construction permit for a location closer to Nashville, but there's no way they're currently using it because their signal is lousy. While driving through Hermitage, Donelson, and Old Hickory (and most other places) there's constant interference/co-channel or bleeding going on. 98.7 out of Hopkinsville has the same problem. Seems to have decent signal strength, but covered in bleed over noise. Are the two interfering that much with each other? It doesn't seem like either would have a strong enough signal to do so in eastern davidson county. WGIC 98.5 doesn't seem to suffer from the issue. Can someone enlighten me on the issue?

The intent is to evade interference from Cuban stations. When Congress authorized Radio Marti, they also required the FCC to accommodate U.S. stations that suffered interference when the inevitable Cuban jamming cranked up. In most cases this meant Florida AMs being allowed to increase power. But for 1160 here and a 1180 station in Mississippi, it meant FM relays.
Since the Cuban interference only exists at night, the FM stations are only allowed to operate at night.
The 98.7 license is tied to the 1160 AM license. When WAMB sold 1160 to Bott, the religious broadcaster that operates 1160 now, the 98.7 FM frequency went with it. WAMB then did another deal to acquire 99.3. Because 99.3 is a normally-licensed FM translator, it's allowed to operate 24/7. (and can be transferred separately from the AM 1200 license)
One correction.. 99.3 has always been licensed to Bill Berry... Way leased it for several years when we came on in '92.... With our original tower near where 840 is south of Franklin, and 3500 watts or so, then....We needed it becasue of WVCP up in Gallatin.... With upgrades, we turned it back over to Bill... This was when I was with Way...

I've heard Cuba on a lot of AM Freqs., but have never heard them on 1160. My Location is north Alabama.
KSL 1160's only 290 miles away from me and on the same heading as Cuba. In the past Cuba's 1160 covered KSL! I can imagine what it was like in the South-East US. when that thing was on.
