Technical problems

Last night I was listening to WBZ at home and Nicole was anchoring when suddenly the station went off the air. I noticed over the next two hours or so there were many problems. They played the public affairs show and Nicole came back from time to time. She was doing her best to keep things going but it was obvious there were big problems at the studio because sometimes she could not get to the traffic anchor or her news reports. Dan Rea also had problems with his show until about ten. I turned to WRKO and that station went off for a time. I wonder what happened behind the scenes. It appears everything is okay today. Madison Rogers is on without incident.

Last night on WXKS AM The Mark Levin show was not on but a dead carrier was on except for the commercials.

I couldn't get the show on line either, and neither on WZLX HD3.

iHeart would be a lot better if you didn't have to sit through multiple minutes of iHeart-inserted ads every time you want to listen to a different station, and I can't imagine anybody anywhere anytime who felt that those Something You Should Know book ads actually told them something that they should know.

no excuse for sloppyness and someone not monitoring, but i can tell you mistakes happen, .. i live above the studio, monitor the station and check in on it all the time, nights and weekends. .and stuff still happens.

dead air because an automation pause somehow found its way in where it shouldnt.... or a file i expected to be there wasnt and were 40 mintues ahead of where we should be.

OK, but iHeart Boston is three (3) 50,000-watt AMs and five (5) FMs, most with full-market reach. All housed in one fairly new (since Aug 2018) and supposedly state-of-the-art facility. I have no idea how many are on the technical staff, nor if any one (human, that is) actively monitors what goes out over the air or onto the web.

Like i said, no excuse for stuff like this to happen... what i was saying depsite the best laid plans ,stuff still happens even to stations like mine. i have my ears on it at least once an hour during non manned day parts (which are 7 to 9am and 12 to 5pm, weekdays)

I live next to my own LPFM station and always keep a check on it. When things happen, I'm usually on top of it or I'll call Mr. Chris, if I can't fix it myself.

State of the art facility with generally the same automation system they've been using for over 20 years. Anything with a computer is bound to have problems at some point. A server somewhere goes down, computer can't play the files until someone can troubleshoot the server. If they're bringing it in off the internet, same thing until the internet goes back up.

I am curious if the pandemic and the financial hit to many radio companies unfortunately made an impact on the technical team. I am not a radio guy but from what I can tell every station is struggling. If the news staff at WBZ is doing more with less, as this forum has made clear, I can only assume that is the way with the tech staff. It does not sound like a long term reasonable solution.

iHeart fired a lot of their engineers, they eventually realized that was a mistake and now a lot of people don't want to work for them. There's an engineering shortage as it is.

...at WBZ...unable to get The Morgan Show on. Donna Halper was to be on but she said on Facebook they were having troubles connecting and getting phone lines working.
Show also cut back to two hours again.

Last night around 9 or 10 pm Donna was on FB explaining how they had trouble getting the show on at all, then found they couldn't do calls. Donna had said her appearance got cancelled and once Morgan did get on, he said on air the show got reduced again.
"Once Morgan was on, he shared some bad news: the 9 o'clock hour got yanked again .
He's back to two hours Saturday nights."--Anneli S on Friends of Morgan White FB group, posted 3 hrs ago

The WBZ radio site did list some kind of other show scheduled for 9 pm slot. then "New England Weekend" (Morgan)

Has the maintenance and painting of the transmitter been completed, anyone know?? Reception on RKO at nite and overnite is horrendous, but, on Talk1200 it's perfect.
