Technics SL-P1200 door contacts mod

Somewhere, many years ago, I remember seeing a post on a forum about a mod to fix, once and for all, the dreaded
'door contacts' on this deck.
If you know the unit, you'll know the problem. The contacts get dirty/worn and become intermittent or refuse to work at all.

Someone came up with a mod, and I'd like to know what it was as I have two of these machines to do.
 
I would have loved to have known that mod back when these were brand new! I had three of them at an AM I engineered and ended up replacing them with consumer-grade units. I still remember seeing the jocks place things like a tape dispenser or a heavy stapler on top of the door to make the deck work.

When the worked they were a pretty nice deck but seemed to have their share of maintenance woes.
