I had the pleasure of working with Ted at WVNJ in 1996. I was the engineer for him at a remote we did at the Meadowlands Racetrack one afternoon, God I wish I could remember when it was, I want to say Spring of 96. Anyway, the station was trying to make inroads against WQEW at the time (Adult Standard wars..) Bill Gaghan was the PD and did a great job. Dell Dixon, Bill Owen (ex WABC/ABC), Mike Prelee (WNEW), Jim Lowe and Ted to name a few. It was a well stocked lineup with some great music.
Anyway, that day, the station seemed to have turned the page, the remote was a huge success and many came out to see Ted. That night he went home and had the stroke. Very sad. He was still on top of his game. Except for a few phone ins, that was his last show. We were all shocked to hear that the man we all heard at the remote had been stricken.
I was told Ted could be... interesting... to work with. I always thought he was funny as hell. One of the most underrated personalities in New York City ever. Yeah, Ingram and Brucie.. but in the same breath, Ted and Willie B.
