Ted Willams Autobiography

The Dispatch has an interesting review of Ted Williams' new autobiography, "A Golden Voice: How Faith, Hard Work, and Humility Brought Me from the Streets to Salvation."

Per Amazon, the "About the Author" section states that at one point Williams became "the #1 drive-time DJ in Columbus, Ohio."

This isn't true, is it?

I doubt it. He was a dj here in Columbus, but it was on 106.3 back when Power 107.5 was on 106.3. I think it was late 80's early 90's around that time. I highly doubt anyone deejaying on a station out of London, Ohio was number one in Columbus lol. Unless it was number one among african-americans maybe.
 
You're right. Could have been in a demographic, not the total population. #1 African American Females 18-24 for example.
 
Maybe his book will give the timefame he was working in radio. He is not mentioned in the Columbus
Dispatch from 1985-1995. Maybe under a different name?
 
He worked at WZZT Z103 too. It was when it was owned by Mark Litton and Rob Case but he was just starting out then and working weekends.

I should disclose that I am remotely connected to one of Ted Williams' currently active contractual ventures.

One shockingly public dynamic in Ted's rise to fame seems to draw little mention now. I am referring to the emergence of his mother, and her comments on a televised interview. She appeared cold and anything but maternal, and obviously not sharing in the joy of her prodigal son's return to the mainstream. She reminded Ted that his troubled behavior had caused her considerable embarrassment before her church community. Nothing else seemed to matter to her.

As far as I was concerned, that icey dialogue spoke volumes, providing insights (to me)into possible causes of her son's troubled odyssey into homelessness and substance abuse. I wondered if that publicly broadcast excoriation may have been typical of how she treated Ted as a child, and if that indeed led to serious self-esteem problems, causing him to drift. I don't presume to have the credentials of Dr Phil, but I do posess the gift of human instinct. I am keenly aware of the potential for problems bound to afflict adults with untreated, childhood self esteem problems. But I am only speculating.

I pray for success on Ted's difficult journey to wholeness and recovery. I also pray for his mother.

More like 15 hours of fame and it's not over yet. He said will be in Chicago this week doing more
radio-TV interviews and book signings.

Maybe WVKO-AM 1580 in Columbus made Ted an offer? All their local radio hosts are syndicated over there on the weekdays. Columbus needs another local voice on the weekdays, to balance things out. Maybe he will do a show over there?

I think the claims he makes as being the number one DJ in Columbus are getting more and more exaggerated...he needs to step in and shut those down.

At no point in my recollection of Columbus radio was TED the force his team is selling him as...perhaps in a niche demo but not dominating the market...also, I may be grasping here but I cannot remember EVER seeing a billboard promoting TED/Sylvester or whatever he went by back then.

In 1984, the top Urban station in Columbus by a LONG SHOT was 1580 WVKO, the rhythm of the city...106.3 (WCKX) really wasn't a layer until 1986 or so and that is also when Z103.1 (WZZT) was making an effort in Urban as well.

I am going to do some digging...maybe some of you have access to archived Arbitron numbers back then and can see what is what.

Let me say this...I AM HAPPY FOR TED to be on the road to recovery from drug addictions but the addiction of lying is worse and if his team is giving false info then they deserve to be shut down and shut up...ALSO...IF TED is part of the lie then he needs to confront this addiction as well.

Did some checking and in 1984 WCKX was still playing Country(Kix 106), WZZT 103.1 went urban sometime in late 1984 and by spring of 1985 it was the #1 Urban station (or as its listed in arbitron "Black") in columbus with a 3.1 compared to WVKO with a 2.7. only a year earlier WVKO was carrying a 7.1 and a 9.1 in spring 1983.
