TED WILLIAMS "Messiah of Broadcasting"??

??? I have seen the video of the "homeless man Ted Williams" a thousand times already on every TV station, blog and website and it just doesn't seem to set right with me!

I can't help believing that this is some real elaborate publicity stunt. This guy goes from panhandling to announcing on the "Today Show" overnight? 2 days ago, he was scrappy looking and today he is well groomed with perfect teeth and white smile? Do they have dentists in homeless camps??

My gripe is, and believe me, I am not looking for a job, thousands of experienced jocks and announcers are out on their "can" from Cheap Channel and other Corporate cuts. Why can't they get a job??

Probably the best comment I heard sums it up! One person said, that offered him a job, "I can tell you that he will make at least minimum wage!!!

So, nothings changed.. Cheapest guy gets the job?

What about AFTRA? Can this guy just go into an NBC Union shop and start announcing??

Interested in all comments on this..

Yea, the "homeless" Ted Williams was standing there on the curb talking about "Oldies 98.9". Which Oldies 98.9 was he talking about?? I think that he is for real. He DID look real rough, and he still seems like he has "the shakes" a little and looks like he has been throgh alot.

Coming right off Christmastime, the world wants another hopeful story. Everyone who could gin up a job felt good offering it to him, because of that hope, and because it looked good.
Long live hope!!

quote from cbs this morning about Ted....

"family members are happy for Williams' newfound success but also raised concerns that the fame could be dangerous for him - saying his past radio career exposed to "the wrong crowd."

You got that right...STAY AWAY FROM RADIO..RUN TO THE LIGHT......

 Now they are getting down to the "nitty gritty "of the story reporting that he is a convicted felon and also has 3 outstanding felony warrants. Hmm, well that's not surprising !

Big Ape's comment about this possibly being a publicity stunt made me remember a stunt Stan Kaplan pulled off in the last century when he owned WAPE in Jacksonville. My memory is fuzzy but as I recall a young man suddenly appeared in downtown Jacksonville giving away money to people he met on the street. I don't remember how much he was giving to each person, it was either 10 or 100 dollar bills and there was quite a bit of commotion with all the tv stations, newspapers, and radio stations reporting on this man giving away money to complete strangers. Everybody was reporting the story. Turns out the young man was Larry Dixon the new morning man on 690WAPE. Stan Kaplan had gotten thousands and thousands of dollars of free publicity from his competitors for his new morning man and it only cost a fraction of what the it would have cost if he had been able to purchase it. Could this be happening again? You can't watch the news without seeing Ted Williams and this isn't in just one market but the whole country. The media is so gullible. Just goes to show you how bad it can be for old baseball players after their prime. I thought he had died and they had frozen his body. But I'm an old codger, what do I know?

Hahah Don't know who you are, Bob, but that's funny..Didn't Ted play right field..Only problem wrong color!!  I remember the Stunt well..Actually Sis came up with it..It was Larry and it was $100 dollar bills..Thank's for the "Blast from the Past"  on the MIGHTY 690

Stunt was later ripped off by hack deejay Jerry Murphy in Charleston, SC and (with less success, I'm told) Wilmington, NC

Magic 98.9. There is a Magic in Columbus, OH and that's where he was when he was "discovered" by the reporter.

What happens now after his lelee in California and getting back on Gray Goose Vodka? Now that he's gone to rehab, have the jobs gone away??

I really hope the opportunities don't go away! Addiction is no fun...so, I am happy that he took the offer to go to rehab! Anyone can beat an addiction. Forget radio...just on a human level, think about this: just weeks ago, he was on the street. He had an addiction to HARD street drugs for years. Now, he has cameras in his face and his family is all over him about hard family issues on national TV, now that he has opportunities to make money and to turn his life around. If this family loves this man as they say they do, why is there so much interest in him now only that the opportunities have arisen? Why did they let him live on the street so long, with apparently little interest in his life! Now, I believe the family should back off and give him the support he desperately needs. I only hope and pray that some corporation isn't just exploiting this guy's hidden talent to make the "New Year Feel Good Story". I only wish the best for Ted and hope he is able to put his addiction behind him forever, surround himself with people who do love and care for him, rediscovers his career, and makes a positive lifestyle for himself.

I'm pulling for this guy. I can only imagine how stressful everything has become for him because of all these new opportunities. He definitely needs help sorting this all out. Remember what happened to poor Susan Boyles (the overnight singing sensation)? She had no addictions, but all of the sudden fame just about sent her over the edge. Ted needs some serious counseling and I really hope he gets it so that he can take advantage of all the good fortune that has been coming his way. He also needs a competent manager, someone who won't take advantage of him.
