Tejano has been dead for years now! People please let it go! Dead format!

I have lived in San Antonio since 1989, saw the Tejano format come and go. I just can't stand some folks still hold on to it! Let it go!! I don't know why San Antonio and Corpus Christi can't let it go! I understand Selena was form Corpus but she has been dead for years!

Hmm... a unique style of music based in the region of south Texas, that speaks to the heritage and aspirations of a unique ethnic subculture? Yes, by all means, lets stamp it out, so people can get on with the mass market worldwide commercial dreck the powers that be decree we should enjoy. But keep your hands off my Polkas, Corridos and Norteno Conjuto, carnalito.

I would have to agree. I am not a tejano fan. However I even know that the clubs and the radio still play the music from the 80's and 90's

Something very similar is also happening with the old KTFM. Some people just will not let it go.

Times are different and the old days aren't coming back.

In reality 1990 was damn near 20 years ago. Yes, 20!!!

20 years is not that long a time. Just look at classical music fans listening to music that is 400 years old. If the music speaks to you, it speaks to you.

True Fred but you don't hear clubs playing those classical music records do ya?

Tejano can't even fill their charts, they have to borrow songs from the regional Mexican format! The artist are old and Oh sooooooo tiered!!! Norteno is Regional Mexican NOT Tejano!

As recently as last year, the top billinng station in San Antonio was KXTN. From a radio point of view, there is no reason to let go. And from the point of view of the listeners, the music, although not as bountiful in currents as in the past, is immensely popular with a signficant lifestyle group.

I understand Selena was form Corpus but she has been dead for years!

Let's see... half of the Beatles are dead. So is Van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix and... does that mean that their music should no longer be played? That's just illogical.

Tejano is dead because the majority of latinos who listen to Spanish music in the states are illegals. This is reality.

WOW!!! just WOW!!!! so when Tejano 107 in San Antonio was #1, I guess we had less [EDIT*]! KQQK in houston was strong back in the day,I guess Houston had less[EDIT*]

Sorry but you statement makes no sense! People Just tuned out of Tejano just because the format Quit giving them a reason to Listen! Music became bad and never recovered! All this Tejano artist living off OLD songs! Whwn was the last time a Tejano song was near the top of the charts?

This is not a reality. Illegal aliens will generally not participate in retings or surveys of any kind, as to do so requires divulging a lot of personal data that an illegal resident would not wish to do. So, essentially all the measured Spanish language listening is by legal residents or citizens. I'm perfectly legal, and I don't listen to English language music.

Second, Tejano is music of and from Texas, created by people whose ancestors goe back way before Davey Crocket and the crew came to the territory. Most "Tejanos" go back many many generations in the US, some to before the time Texas flew the US flag.

Finally, "Spanish music" is from Spain. The Music played on Spanish language station in Texas is from Mexico and Latin Amrerica for the most part.

The only Tejano songs to ever hit the charts nationally were ones that crossed over. La Mafia was a grupera crossover, as was, to some extent, Mazz. Selena's hits outside of Tejano radio were pure crossovers that were cumbias and rancheras, not puro tejano sounds.

So, to answer, pragmatically, a tejano song has never gotten near the top of the charts. Tejano artists have, but with crossover songs.

There is norteña music that is closer to Tejano than to mainstream, which is why it gets limited play outside Texas...

If you're not armed for a debate, don't attend.

I just wanted to Comment on This issue. Look for Fact Most of the people losing Jobs today will be Mexicans. With less and Less Money. No Tv, No Fun.... So Look for These Tejano Stations to put themself back on Top. With Obama and His Clueless way. I would say KXTN Out of SA And The one Spanish Station in Austin Will be back on top. If my Numbers are right. 75% job Less will be Hispanic. Give till summer Time for the Ratings to change.

how is this relevant to tejano being a dead format? how is stereotyping that only "mexicans" will be the only people losing their jobs tied into this conversation? and please explain to me how in the world does Obama fit into a conversation about tejano being dead?

Not to veer off topic, David, but Van Morrison isn't dead. Yet.

Carry on.

Any format is viable if a signifcant number of listeners make it part of their daily life. Tejano KXTN succeeds based on music, personalities and promotions. Oldies KONO succeeds for the same reasons. Or Classical KMFA in Austin for that matter. Just because there is a dearth of fresh music to add to the format doesn's make it less viable as long as the listeners keep coming back.

My bad. Meant to type "Jim" of course.

As much as I would love to argue, I am a 6th generation Texan. Born and raised in the Valley and have lived in Austin for the past 10 years. I have a hispanic surname as does my husband. I grew up listening to Little Joe, Mazz, and La Mafia. When Selena died, the FORMAT blew up! Face it. Tejano music is the poor person's country music. When I worked for stations in the valley, we always knew it would be an uphill battle. Now, KXTN in San Antonio is the one RARE station that does well doing PURE Tejano. KKPS in McAllen is not nearly as popular as it was before.

Tejano is dead.

Univision is lucky that Tejano works works here in San antonio( But for how long). I have nothing against Univision, just saying, they are lucky!!! your 18,19,20 year old has no connection with the format! Selena is a dead artist, Who is La Mafia, and lil joe! Thank God for father time to keep things moving along! Die Tejano Die!!!
