Tejano station DX on 99.9?

I was listening to KSHN today as I was driving home (even though I'm way out of its coverage area in Houston, my vehicle receives it fairly decently most of the time). As I was driving up Holcombe, for about half a mile, some Tejano station overrode the signal. It had an announcer, so I don't think it was a pirate or a Part 15, but I wasn't able to catch an ID. I'm just curious about where this might have come from.

That was KSAB out of Robstown, Texas close to Corpus Christi. Since Holcombe turns into Bellaire Blvd which is about less than 15 miles from Highway 59, and you are close to the Mo. City Antenna farm, it is tropo alright. The KSHN signal is from Liberty, Texas to the North and with hot weathers and an open sky, you just picked up a station near Corpus Christi. I picked it up in San Antonio by the Airport just last month. Super Tejano 99.9 KSAB Robstown (legal ID)

If you are hearing KSAB with a solid signal you should also check for RGV stations. KSAB has always been a good indicator of tropo towards The Valley.

Likewise, when I hear KSAB here in the RGV, I always check for Houston - KKBQ and KKRW come in quite frequently. :)

Does Monterrey make it up to Houston often? I would think that it would be possible, but there are a lot of co-channels between the two markets (106.9, 95.7, 105.3, etc.) which I assume Houston would overpower.

Extremely rare, although I have heard Monterrey on FM on a few occasions. The mountainous terrain around the city might diminish any tropo, and it is too close for E-skip into Houston.

Considering some of those mountains stand over 4,000 feet in some areas, you may be right.

In Houston, I have been able to catch at least one station out of Tampico, Tamaulipas (before IBOC). Some of the stations I frequently catch that come from the border area are XHVTH (107.1 Matamoros, TA), XHAAA (93.1 Reynosa, TA), XHAVO (101.5 Reynosa) and KQUR (94.9 Laredo, TX)
