Telemundo coming to Nashville

Telemundo has been available off-air via LPTV channel 42 for quitea while: decent signal over Davidson County. Lots of local ads...Having this on one of WSMV's digital sub-channels is a non-eventas NO ONE WILL SEE IT.

This gets it on to Comcast digital cable where people will see it.Looks like the big use of the extra digital TV space will be to get cable coverage for the larger networks. CW and MY are using the same plan to get on cable in a lot of markets.

I wasn't aware that Comcast carried anything but the main HDTVportion of the digital broadcast signals...the "sub channels" are not included.

It's actually Telefutura on 42, not Telemundo. It's the same company, though. Comcast does carry some subchannels, like WKRN's weather channel and WNPT's second channel. BTW, Telemundo is on Comcast anyway.

you're right...I confused TeleFutura with Telemundo.never happened before.... ;)

Telefutura is not co-owned with Telemundo. It's co-owned with Univision, the other major Spanish-language network. (the one that's carried on Comcast analog cable, somewhere up around the 50s or so)

Telemundo is owned by NBC. They have a few local duopolies in major Hispanic markets (Dallas and LA come to mind) but only one national network.

4-2 is on digital cable on Comcast. I'm not privy to all the decisions involved but my educated guess is that it's on 4-2 as the fastest & least expensive way to get the signal from Knob Road to the cable headends. It should also be noted that at least half of the TVs currently on sale at a typical store (Wal-Mart) contain ATSC digital tuners, and this includes sets selling for as little as $210. The number of people with OTA digital capability is growing quickly.

While cable is not *required* to carry digital subchannels, in many markets, it is. Major network affiliates (AFAIK) have linked retransmission consent for their major network to carriage of any other channels they would like cable to carry.

In my area (Indianapolis DMA), both our WRTV/ABC and WTHR/NBC affiliates have a digital subchannel each that is carried on analog cable. One on basic (WTHR's SkyTrak Weather Network), one on extended basic (WRTV's NewsChannel64). Our WISH/CBS affiliate has a digital subchannel (Local Weather Station) that is carried on some cable systems but not all, as well as their co-owned WIIH-CA/Univision affiliate which is seemingly only carried on cable systems serving the city of Indianapolis / Marion County but not on systems serving outlying areas. I have been unable to determine why our CBS affiliate, (owned by LIN television) has been unable to negotiate the same terms as the other affiliates when it comes to cable carriage; but it is arguable that since they also own the local WNDY/UPN(My) affiliate, that they already have two channels on basic cable.

I suspect that some similar process will eventually get "The Tube" carried on digital cable here, as Tribune owns a (WTTV//WTTK)WB(CW)/(WXIN)FOX duopoly, and presumably could threaten to withhold both networks if The Tube subchannel wasn't carried.

I am unclear about the WFYI/PBS subchannel situation, as only one cable operator (Comcast) carries all the subchannels. Every other operator only carries PBS' HD channel.
