Telephone Hybrid Needed

A friend is taking his on-air computer show to the Internet. He wants a digital hybrid. At first, I was going to recommend the J-K unit, but then I heard some negative comments about it. What digital hybrids are available for (much) less than $2000? We used a unit that was a glorified rack-mounted speakerphone with balanced inputs and outputs many years ago, and it worked great, but I don't remember who made it. If we bought it, it could not have been expensive.

I spent some time configuring a speakerphone for line level audio and out and got it working, but even with A-25 transformers, I was not able to provide enough isolation to eliminate 60/120Hz noise.

There's Telos, and there's everybody else. For programming which is essentially all telephone calls, do it right the first time. You can come off the chaining switch in an 1A2 multiline instrument for line selection, and save the price of the switchgear. Buy just the digital hybrid itself.

Telos recently released their 3rd generation digital hybrid Hx1, to replace the older Telos One. Comes with AGC and gate, digital dynamic EQ, anti-feedback, caller override, auto-answer, etc. List price is $795.

Just installed one of the new Telos HX1's.

Nice!

But be sure to check your phone system to be sure it's analog. Digital phone systems need adapters (usually sold for the purpose of hooking up a fax machine) to convert D to A so it'll work with a hybrid. I have not been able to find any brand of hybrid designed directly for use with digital phone systems. The word "digital" in the name of the hybrid refers to how it processes things....NOT what it's designed to work with.

We're waiting on a VOIP multi-line interface for broadcast. I know there's a software solutin out there, but its very $$$.

I've figured out a way to create a multi-line VOIP phone system using Google Voice, but I have not found a way to do call screening. Google Voice can be used to create a highly isolated hybrid-type system. If you haven't tried it, you should.

Every once in a while I find one of these, which either go under the Gentner or ClearOne brand on EBay for very little scratchola.
While I do see some for about $199, I just snagged another which started at 99 cents for $3.44. Shipping cost more than the unit, lol.

I think they are intended for teleconferencing and have slightly different connectors, those 3 pin push on, forget what u call them presently, rather than XLR's, but they do work well.

Hx1 is one line, and Hx2 is for two separate lines--the line switching with either would be done by a separate device.

Telos has forgotten... this is most certainly is not their third generation...

Generation 1 - Telos 10 (this happened to include switching, but it was the first generation hybrid as well)

Generation 2 - Telos 100 Hybrid

Generation 2.5 Telos ONE

Generation 3 Telos Delta 100

Generation 3.5 - Telos TWO, TWOx12, 2101

Generation 4 - Telos Nx12, Nx6

Generation 4.5 - Telos HX series

So it is generation 4 or generation 7, depending on how you count! Most definitely not third generation.

IIRC I used the term "third generation" in the manual or literature for the TWO or Twox12. The fault is not with Goran either, this terminology is from some of their literature.

It is indeed a new generation.

If you want to use a minimum of 4 rollover phone lines, will the JK Audio Innkeeper 4 do the job? Is there anything else that you need with the JK Audio Innkeeper 4? Is it reliable and a good and easy piece of equipment to use? Are there any other alternatives that are cheaper?

The alternative is to buy the best hybrid you can (e.g. Telos), and make a line selector for it.

As mentioned previously, you can easily convert an old 1A2 key phone into a line switcher.

You could always use a PASSIVE Broadcast Tools switcher to pick the lines etc. http://www.broadcasttools.com/view_product.php?pid=187 or http://www.broadcasttools.com/view_product.php?pid=38 You could get a single phone hybrid that way of the best quality. You'd want a ring indicator somewhere too of course. If you already had a telephone system phone right there that also has the studio lines, that's the ring detector. Otherwise you'll want to get a little flasher or something: http://www.sandman.com/ (a good source for stuff like that)
