Telesouth buys 3 more...

Just noticed this in the business section of the Clarion-Ledger and double checked on the FCC website. Looks like Rusty O'Neal is getting out of the radio business. WRQO, WDXO and WOEG were all sold to Telesouth Communications.

WRQO will become a Supertalk Mississippi affiliate

WRQO (Q102) will switch from country music to talk (thereby becoming a Supertalk Mississippi affiliate). WDXO (Oldies 92.9) and WOEG (The Light?), however, may keep the same respective formats: oldies and gospel.

WRQO has been country ever since I can remember. I wouldn't call myself a fan of the station, but I hate to see them go. Someone mentioned in the post about Wayne Dowdy buying WBKN and whether they stay country or not. Now that WRQO's bowing out of the country format, maybe WBKN stays in it.
______________

I hate to see that. I listen to them whenever I can pick them up. I like the show where the two guys play the old rock records, which is odd for a country station. I hate to see them put that awful sounding supertalk on it. I guess they will turn off the stereo. I seldom listen to it because the audio sounds worse than a dial up modem stream. A perfect waste of FM radio. Talk should be on AM. WJNT AM audio runs circles around that gurgling, swishing crap audio on Supertalk. Plus no Rush, no Hannity. They should put it on one of the smaller stations or on AM. Do they own the Montecello AM station 1270?

doubt it..k106 booms into brookhaven. and its live and local. as for q102 it signed on in 1988 i believe. started out as a country station playing 5 decades of country. and was live! in recent years it has become a sattelite feed at night with classic country and live during the day. randy on the radio as he calls himself has been there from the beginning. this would put him out of a job unless he lands at k106.
______________

OMG...It's been live, local country for about 20 years! Listeners are going to be PISSED. Their ratings will be in the basement. I wondered if this was going to happen; Supertalk doesn't have an affiliate in SW MS. WBKN should stay country now; its ratings will go through the roof if it does. I wonder where Chuck Ivey will end up?

Ratings? Are these Arbitron rated markets??? Of course, luckily,Supertalk hasn't had to rely on ratings anywhere they are now.
______________

Re: WRQO will become a Supertalk Mississippi affiliate

WFMN needs to figure out what a news talk station should sound like. They carry everything from mediocre local talk shows to money talks...yawn and the new show in the afternoon puts me right to sleep. I much preferred the O'Reilly factor as a live show. At least then you could call in and be part of the one show they carry that has some value. But the thing that really makes no sense is the Ole Miss Sports. Don't think I'm bashing the Rebels. I'm not...even though I don't give a rat's backside about them. For the record, I'm not a State fan either. I just don't get it. If my count is correct, we have 4 sports stations in town. Right? Do those sports stations break their format to carry news? No. Do they disrupt regular national programming to cover a local outdoor show? No. They're sports...all the time. Let them give Jackson it's Ole Miss programming. Stick to news or become an FM sports station.

As for the sound...I'm with you on the poor quality.

On the subject of news talk stations...1180 AM should dump Dr. Laura. She sounds like she has had enough of talking to people who actually value her thoughts and opinions. Everytime I hear that show, I have to keep from calling her or writing her to tell her just how abrasive she is. If she's a psychologist, she should get a shrink of her own.

Actually, the Score 620 does play news at the top of the hour and Paul Harvey, too. Anyhow, going FM is where sports is headed right now. MSU was on 620 and Q105.1 (football was on both 620 and Q; basketball and baseball were on 620), but Clear Channel jerked with the karma by not willing to air all MSU sports on FM. That's where Inner City came in snatched MSU sports away. You're able to hear football and basketball on WOAD-FM (though I think it's been mentioned here that MSU baseball will still be on 620, which doesn't make since since the other two sports are on another station).

It's not just the colleges either. The pros are also going FM. Several NFL teams, like the Chargers, Falcons and Redskins have FM flagship stations. The NBA's Memphis Grizzlies have a flagship in WRBO 103.5.

As for SuperTalk, seems like a wiser move for them would've been to move O'Reilly to 9PM and carry Michael Savage live. Sorry, radeeyohead, it would keep you up longer at night, but I believe Savage is more popular than O'Reilly (though correct me if I'm wrong), so I'd rather go with the hot hand, which is Savage.

> As for the sound...I'm with you on the poor quality.

SuperTalk is awful with their audio. What used to get to me was when Mary Weiden had her afternoon show, her outro music going into the news at half past the hour (the guitar solo to "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls) was in mono. Love the song, but couldn't stand to hear it on SuperTalk.

Can't stand her either, but I think she is still rather popular. At one time, she was the second most-listened to talk show host behind Rush Limbaugh. I'm guessing her stock has dropped now since Sean Hannity's show started taking off. What doesn't bode well for Laura is that many stations, like WJNT and Atlanta's WGST, have tape-delayed her. Especially not good when a major-market station like WGST delays a show.

Re: WRQO will become a Supertalk Mississippi affiliate

I used to listen to Laura and I agree with most of her advice although I think she can be a little blunt with the callers at time, but I think that show has run its course and is beginning to sound kinda tired. Been there done that. I think WJNT should find another entertaining conservative to replace it. I used to listen to some stuff on WPBQ 1240 when it was talk like Neil Boortz. Maybe they could put something on that is currently not airing in Jackson anymore. No liberals, no snake oil, vitamins, or dead doctors don't lie crap either. I also don't care for real estate, lawyers and too much money and finance (mutual funds and 401k talk is just not that entertaining to me). I want news and talk. I'd like to see WJNT with better local programing also. WFMN, I'm sorry, but I've never thought that station was very good.

I should say ad sales will go way down. Of course, they weren't that hot anyway; that's probably why the stations were all sold! However, it's still a better ad market than Greenville. :)

Yeah, her ratings dropped like a rock after Hannity took off! The last time I heard her, it was depressing. WJNT or SuperTalk needs Glenn Beck and/or Neal Boortz. BTW, WRQO has had talk before; they ran TalkNet at night for the first few years.

Re: WRQO will become a Supertalk Mississippi affiliate

Savage wears me out. He sounds like a bitter man sometimes. He pouts and whines about his lower than desired prominence. And acts like it doesn't bother him. But when you have 4th grade pun names for all your competitors, it's pretty obvious that it does. I just wish he'd pick a side and stay there.

Don't worry. I wouldn't stay up late to listen to any talk show. But it's much better than listening to any and every sport that Ole Miss plays.

yes they are rated but you can see the numbers only if you subscribe. even the 12+. dowdy sells k106 in brookhaven which reaches there really well. unless he flips 92.1 to classic country or maybe hot country i dont see it staying country long. k106 is a mix of classic and new country. kinda like 96.3 but better..
______________

I distinctly remember them running Bruce Williams at night around 1992. I think they carried the entire TalkNet lineup.

Yay! One more town gets its (un)fair share of truly bad radio. God help us!
