Television IN the movie Midnight Cowboy

The purpose of this thread is NOT about how the movie was rated X and so much was cut out for TV and how WABC radio was in this movie but rather two scenes that stuck with me all these years.

1. The scene when John Voight and that lady were about to make love and the TV comes on I recall that Jolly Green Giant TV commercial but also some panel show called I think "Spaceline". Was this a local New York City show or was this show made for the movie ???

2. In another scene John Voight was in his hotel room and watches TV and on that TV was a dog dressed up as a woman.. In this scene a guy who looks like Wally Cox appears and someone sprays women's perfume on the dog and the TV audience thought that was funny but not John Voight and of course not the dog either. Again was this a real show ?? For the record I could not find anything that Wally Cox was in this movie.

Thank You

This is one of my favorite movies and I have it on DVD. Let me get back to you on this question after I have time to review it. The WABC segment happens relatively early in the movie, and is great as it features a 1968 WABC jingle. The segment you are talking about certainly looked authentic, but not sure. It seemed to be part of a channel surf at the time, and was indeed likely local. But perhaps someone has more information.

I have reviewed the tv scenes mentioned. I can't make out much, but again, they seem authentic. A mix of Hollywood classic movies, an exercise show, a few commercial snippets, and some local talk shows. My best guess is what I said earlier, a true channel surf. The closing credits offer no further information, nor does IMDB. Perhaps a mystery never to be solved.

If this is a true channel surf didn't the movie folks had to get the OK from those who owned the clips ??? 1970's Myra Breckingridge and Pink Flamingos from 1972 had issues with that. Radio 93 KHJ and KABC-TV both had a problem with Myra and Baltimore's WLPL radio had ran into a problem with John Waters over a shot of a billboard for WLPL's Gary "More Music" Michaels just before Divine ate dog crap.

I recall when Rain Man was being shown for airline passengers, one airline (Quantas, I believe) cut out a key part because Raymond Babbitt is quoting plane crash statistics, with that airline prominently mentioned.

Speaking of Rain Man..the line from that movie "K-Mart SUCKS", what was K-Mart's take on that ?? In the movie Myra Breckinridge, Mae West was in a limo talking to a cop or whoever about "policeman's balls". The driver of the limo turns on the radio to 93 KHJ and it was the Real Don Steele. Mae West says "I bet he has nice BALLS too !!". Apparently Steele and KHJ thought is was funny but not so much RKO General who owned the station at the time. Scene was cut.
