Tell CBS 4 The Word is: REAL-TOR, Not REAL-A-TOR

There is no such word as REALATOR. Would someone please tell Joe Shortsleeve.
He did a "special report" on Massachusetts Real Estate Agents/Salespersons on CBS-4's 11PM news on Monday. During the piece he referred to the suspect in the report as a REAL-A-TOR. There is no such animal.

This is a common broadcasting mistake, but for the life of me if you can spell there is no reason to pronounce it incorrectly. Even the generic ads for Real Estate agents over pronounces the word REALTOR to get the point across but apparently with little result.

Also makes me wonder if there is anyone in the CBS 4 newsroom who reviews these tape segments before they run for such errors. Sadly, they might not know the correct pronunciation of the word.

I'm not at all an expert on TV news production, but what if they did catch the mispronunciation? Would a busy news operation really make him go back out on location and shoot the piece again, or would they have to let it slide?

That's true. And, Joe should know better. However, a lot of people on the street make the same mistake. Nonetheless, a reporter works with words for a living and should know better.

And, I heard Maria Stephanos butcher Hugo Chavez' name no less than 4 times in a row on Sunday night. Sha-vez rather than Cha(h)-vez. During a story about his plan to supply low income folks with cut-rate heating oil.

He's also become a pretty big newsmaker lately, so the gaffe was pretty painful. Things like that also diminish a reporter/anchor's credibility.

No mention about his bad record with his own people or recent diplomatic issues with the USA either. A pretty flat and weakly done story. Makes you wonder about the stories that you know nothing about, how accurate are those? Which is the point of the thread, I suppose.

Let it slide...although Realtor...I mean...cmon. Simple.
