Tell me about Dothan radio?

The Radio People is a fine company to work for. Despite the catcalls from the bleachers and former disgruntled employees, I am proud to say I have been gainfully employed for 9 years and enjoy every day I spend here. Yeah, sometimes you have your rough days, but this company has been good to me ever since I got here in 2003. I love what I do and I have the respect from my bosses and co-workers.

Xeno's right. If you shut-up, put your head down, and work beyond your job description you will be fine with TRP. (I believe, however, that is the case it is ANYWHERE you work these days...)

I worked for them for almost 8 years. I left on my own terms and came to work for Bluewater Broadcasting in Montgomery.
 
I really can't believe you said that.....I consider my self a team player and choose to work beyond my job description because it benefits the station and company I work for. And in return I have continued to have the best on-air ratings, and lots of loyal listeners, no matter what time slot I have been in. I also have made the commercial production department the best in the Wiregrass. I look forward to continuing to work here and make it the best company it can be. If a time ever comes that I have to move on, I will thank them for giving me a steady paycheck and letting me entertaining the masses.
 
Skip - calm down. It wasn't a dig at you, or The Radio People.

I was implying, that to have long-term employment in this day-and-age you need to:

A) Be grandfathered in via family
B) Be an incredible (and profitable) talent
C) Go above and beyond the call of duty

You cannot expect to be just "a jock" anymore. If that's all you want to do, you WILL BE expendable (that and make $18-22k per year).

You and I both worked for TRP for a long time, because we branched out and made ourselves valuable. I love ya Skip. Hell, I helped hire you...
 
I know, Dood. I'm not aiming any animosity at you. Just defending my place of business. I am glad you were able to move to another market, and I know you have been prosperous there. I wish you all the best. It still stings that people think the Radio People isn't a good place to work. Kudos
 
Since this thread is being dominated by two top talents in two different Alabama markets, I'm wondering if either of you would mind answering a question most people would want to keep confidential. I do not really believe either of you would be willing to answer these questions, but why not try anyway?

How many people in the radio business in Dothan or Montgomery make a very good living? I'm thinking in the neighborhood of $100k a year including benefits.
What percentage of people in the business in Dothan or Montgomery make $25k or less (including any benefits)?
How does the pay in these two markets compare to the rest of Dixie? or to other similarly sized markets?
How does the pay in Dothan compare to Albany, GA or Panama City, FL?

Sure, I'll answer.

I have no idea of Montgomery, but for Dothan:

1. I have only heard of one or two individuals (On Air) that might have made upwards to 100K. I, myself, make a comfortable living with what I do, but in no way close to that. Would be nice though! 8 )

2. I really don't know, but for a wild guess I would say, maybe 30 - 35 %

3. I really have no idea.....I've never been privy to have information about other markets.

4. Same answer as 3.

Thanks Radio! For all my faults, I have been blessed for a very long time to be doing what I am doing, and have listeners that appreciate what I do. After all, it's not for me, it's for them.
 
Between his salary and the large amount of live endorsements; Greg Budell (NewsTalk 107.9) might be the only jock making near $100,000. He's also the hardest working jock I know, doing 3 shows (two of them live) a day.

Holy shit! I would have never guessed someone working radio in Montgomery, that didn't at least have ownership of his station, would be able to make close to 100k/year without simulcasting or syndicating their show to other markets. According to his biography he came from WLS, so he was properly trained... how the hell did he wind up in the Gump?

I'm not familiar with Greg Budell, is he working so hard that it's dangerous to his health?
I never thought there was any decent money for employees in Montgomery media unless it was an old time jock still doing a major air shift while also running some other important position like perhaps programming while at the same time helping set up sales for locals who have known his voice for decades at WBAM or WLWI.

Good for him... assuming his job isn't killing him.

A friend and former co-worker of mine worked for The Radio People probably 15 or so years ago, and she absolutely loved it. She never had anything bad to say about the company.

I've heard people on these boards say bad things about them, but I suspect at least one of the following is happening: (1) Radio has a lot of bad employees. Anyone who has ever worked in radio knows what I'm talking about. Those people also can't accept responsibility for their own actions and blame everyone else. (2) The Radio People, like many operations, could easily be well run in some markets and not so well run in others. In spite of corporate dictates and cost cutting, local management still matters a lot.
 
I worked for the Radio People about ten years ago and had a blast but most of those people are long gone. They were nice enough to give me my first morning gig and I made around $30k base in mornings. Add in insurance, remotes and some free drinks at Darkside and it was a very live-able wage. I left for the same type of gig in Tallahassee which was a little bigger market and probably added another $15k to my salary. Hope that helps, a little.
