Tell me how this makes sense

A few weeks ago NewsChannel 8 WTNH did a whole expose about "Direct Buy". They didn't talk very nicely about them at all. But guess what was on at 2:05AM this morning? If you guessed a "Direct Buy" Infomercial, give yourself 10 points.

To what I know, this is appears to be an affiliate of a network. I don't know if you have noticed that usually before and after an informercial they show a disclaimer, The views expressed in this program does not reflect the views of "such and such network" and its affiliates. I hope that I could clear that up for you.

*Very* ironic.

A couple of weeks ago in our local newspaper, there was a local op-ed column (literally almost a half-page worth) blasting Wal-Mart and all of its typical problems, i.e. price-fixing, healthcare controversies, anti-competetiveness etc. It appears they are planning on putting in a Wally World in a nearby town much to the dismay of the town's citizens. And what do I find tucked away in the paper between that section and the neighbouring "Business" section? A full-colour, ten-page Wal-Mart advertising circular!

<laughing> Honestly folks, you just can't make this kind of stuff up.............. </laughing>

No matter what the point of view
If they shell out the bucks, it works for you!

And if the station or newspaper had pulled a negative story/editorial because the sales department, people would be screaming from the hilltops. Even companies that the editorial staffs may think are less than honorable are free to buy advertising.

Yeah, really. What's worse is I've seen a story blasting something (I forgot what it was), then saw a commercial for the exact product in the next commercial break! I mean, it is a fine line they tow, but it's a line nonetheless.

Another sign that "media" is not "media": There's stations I've worked at where reporters were fired because they did a story that affected one of the key advertisers, and they threatened to pull their ads if nothing was done. Of course, would you bite the hand that feeds you?

I see nothing wrong with this. It's somewhat noble and risky for a media outlet to criticize an advertiser. But at least they went through with it. If the advertiser wants to pull its money out, that's their choice, but at least the "news" department is willing to do that.
