Telling Non-Radio Geeks music format.

Sorry, I accidently post this on the tv board. It should belong to the coast to coast board.

How would you tell a person this radio format "Urban Adult Contemporary." A lot of people thinks if they heard the word "Urban" it means Hip-Hop or Rap music. How would tell a person trying to describe "Urban AC" format to an average Joe. Also, what are the differences between "CHR-RHYTHMIC" and "Urban Contemporary"?

Same thing for "Modern AC"

Same thing for "Modern AC"

Urban music can also include Motown, Rhythm & Blues, and Soul as well as Hip-Hop or Rap.

Urban AC = Tends to be R&B Hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today. Some stations may also throw in some Classic Soul. These stations usually do not play any rap/hip-hop. (2 more terms used interchangably).

Urban Contemporary = These stations play mostly R&B Music from the past 5-10 years. Some may play some rap/hip-hop, but not much. JAMZ 910 in Hartford (1997-2001) was an Urban Contemporary station.

CHR-RHYTHMIC or Rythmic CHR = This is kind of complicated. Some of these stations play mostly hip-hop/rap and R&B, while others may also mix in some other hit music. CBS's HOT 93.7 in Hartford is classified as Rythmic CHR or CHR Rythmic, must most people who listen to it refer to it as the hip-hop station. Also there's not much difference between CBS's HOT 93.7 and Clear Channel's POWER 104.1, but POWER 104.1 is classified as Hip-Hop.

As they never showed up in the ratings I'm not sure what the other former Urban Station in Hartford was classified as. BLAZE 990 (October 2000-December 2001) definately played lots more hip-hop than JAMZ 910, but they also had blocks at different times during the day where they would play R&B and Slow Jams, Classic R&B, and Classic Hip-Hop. There were no set times either for the music blocks. They could be as short as 10 minutes or as long as 45. They could be playing hip-hop and then they'd play a liner "Blazin' R&B. Blaze 990" And then they would play an R&B song. then a liner "Here Comes More Blazin' R&B. Blaze 990" and they would play more R&B Music.
