Tempers Flare at WLNE - Morale Crashing

http://www.golocalprov.com/business/exclusive-tempers-flare-at-channel-6/

Apparently tempers are flaring among the staff as a shouting match took place between the anchor John Deluca and the new manager in the middle of the newsroom.

To add fuel to the fire, the new owners cut the rent payments by moving the master control equipment from the basement to the second floor, taking up the areas where reporters used to sit.

This means that WLNE's jam packed newsroom will become even more crammed. Word is that these reporters were not even notified that they would be relocated before it was done.

No room for HD equipment? ::)

Wow, good job wlne. Give one of the better news men a reason to jump ship to 10 or 12/64. This new owner sounds like a typical jerk boss. A side note I watch on cable tv from halifax mass. I cant get six ota and yesterday the cable signal Has black bars on the sides sort of like they are up converting the picture. I dont know if its comcast or wlne.

Also according to the above article, WLNE will now leave the air during late-night hours, following the same lead as Citadel's other stations.

While WLNE has been a sinking ship before Citadel, it seems now that that sinking ship has hit a land mine.

Sometimes I wonder if ABC regretted approving the sale of WLNE to Citadel, as its ownership has made the station even worse than before.

If that's the case, things should have gotten better by now. Things have been steadily getting worse there since January 1, 1963, they day that the station signed onto the air as WTEV.

I think they just swapped one bad for another. Global decided that it was best to invest in news instead of syndicated programming, and that led them to their bankruptcy. On the other hand, Citadel seems to be doing the exact opposite: investing a little more than its predecessors on syndication, but cutting back the news as well as the broadcast day itself.

Personally, I think more stations should leave the air overnight instead of run infomercial schlock. Even if it's just for an hour between the local news replay and World News Now.

If you can't be the 2 current local news outlets, it makes sense to try to beat their syndicated programming.

It's clear that Rhode Islanders are not interested in having three good news outlets. Over the years, channel 6 has tried just about every news format known to man and the viewership hasn't substantially increased. At some point, you just have to cut your losses and increase syndicated programming.

I'm not so sure it's purely about "interest". WTEV/WLNE, I think, is mostly just a victim of history. WJAR hit the air in 1949, and WPRI in 1955. Remember, WTEV didn't make it to the air till New Years Day 1963. By that time, the viewing habits of viewers in the market was hopelessly set in stone.

Had the original WTEV ownership group been around early enough to grab the VHF Channel 12 license for Providence, the story may have turned out very differently.

Really, my explanation is better for RI. Otherwise, it is clear that RI'ers are stuck in the ancient past -- what happened 55 or 60 years ago! :D
