Google is all about monetisation. When I had a forum up eons ago I had Adsense, but at the time I only had 2 simple banner ads on top and bottom of my board - nothing else. Got like $25 a month. Now you barely get a buck 3.98 or so. Now some forums are really bad on the ads, even a lot worse then you see here. Sadly the internet ad market crashed and burned long ago.

One suggestion for here is maybe try like a "Pub Room" or something where those who donate like $50 or more a year get access to. Got a feeling many here would join that to keep this place running and help reduce the ads too.

Google ad revenue is dropping as most ad money is target towards video platforms. Revenue on client sites I've seen drop from a pre-pandemic peak of $3-$4000 per month to a few hundred dollars despite traffic rising. But it also helps to go through on the site admin side to block the low-rent advertisers that just put up those big green Continue buttons meant to trick older readers.

I've had inquiries about offering an ad-free version of the site for a subscription and it is something being considered. But in the meantime, I'm not sure that a thread that has evolved into taking money out of our pockets is warranted to continue

Sure some members have ideas how to set up a subscription/donation type thing and maybe toss in a few special sub-forums for incentives. I know servers don't pay for themselves.

I'm was a Mod on another board (for musicians) until recently and they did that. The servers, traffic, etc was like $250 month and was getting about 200 average a month from donations and subs and was able to not depend on Google so heavily. Sadly that board came to an end recently due to the original owner getting real ill and unlike here, he had no one to take it over.

I have bought a radio after seeing an ad on this site, and there's a really attractive radio I can see that I wouldn't mind buying but it costs more than I would want to pay. I don't have a real need for it right now.

That reminds me, when I had my own board I had a banner ad (old school) from C Crane Radio since part of the board catered to amateur radio operators. A few radios and aerials were bought from those.

For those ordering from Temu, what’s been your experience?

Really good, personally. Every single order came with better quality then I expected and what ordered.

Mostly the same stuff Amazon has, same factories. Unfortunately we can’t get away from slave labor.

I've gotten into the habit of using two tracker-blockers, an ad blocker and a javascript blocker, and I didn't even realize there were ads here because my setup completely filters all of them!

Which is a good thing, because the way some of these companies track people verges on scary.

A few weeks ago, I was discussing something with a friend (I don't remember what it was, but it doesn't matter). Anyway, I go home, and later that evening I was browsing around, and I saw some ads slip through (it occasionally happens, even with my setup) for this thing my friend and I had mentioned! I never entered it into a search engine or anything. We just talked about it. Could it have been a coincidence? I don't know. I'm not super paranoid, but I did happen to have my phone with me, so It feels like, as crazy and far fetched as it seems, maybe the ad company listened in via the phone's microphone somehow. How else could they have known about something that I never searched for?

I refuse to use Google Chrome for any reason, because it effectively behaves like spyware, and that deeply concerns me.

There are various "ungoogled" Chromium-based browsers that are thought to be relatively safe, but I still tend to avoid them because it's hard to be certain.

Yeah, that can happen. Some credit card companies are better than others, but virtually all will sell customer's info to Google and the like.

There's a big grey market for information that few people realize exists*. But it's out there, and it's chock full of companies that buy and sell people's info to advertisers and such for profit, with little regard for privacy and ethics.

I actually wish it weren't real, because I find some of the stuff I've read about to be rather scary.

I hate Chrome too and don't even have it on my machine. Firefox FTW. I don't know if it's just me or for all, but I turned off the ad-blocker and seems the ads are more tamed, one on top, pair on the bottom and one per side. No taco ads, but one for Ashley that shows a radio.

This will sound wild but there have been times that I would look at a site online while I was watching something on You Tube and an ad would pop up while I was at that site, even if I had never been to it or made a purchase there before!

That's one reason I think I'm overloaded with Temu ads because I looked at something from there at one time, or even clicked on something by accident. I do occasionally buy things on Ebay and get a ton of ads from them, even if I clicked on something by accident.

Just now on another site I got an ad about St. Patrick's Day. Why would that ad ever appear this time of year?

Now that the site is running on my server, I do have it also on my Adsense account and have adjusted the ad levels down from the automatic settings that Frank must've had running on his.

Also I curate my adsense account to block advertisers that bring in lower value such as Temu and all of those scam sites with a giant green "Continue" button and nothing else as they come like a game of whack-a-mole.

Now if Google can filter those out before they hit the websites. Have a feeling Frank never tweaked and peaked the Adsense. Temu is a naughty one as they've are known to auto-install on devices without the user's permission.

But with permission of the of the Android phone manufacturers to be added who you agreed to their licensing agreements with. It's like when Apple put the U2 album on everyone's iTunes. Its not forcing ads, but they're paying for placement.
