One more time! King Broadcasting did not sell KSFO/KYA-FM to ABC, They sold it to the guy that owned the Good Guy's Stores! He sold it to ABC.

Regardless, the point remains the same; KGO's management treated Gene Nelson shabbily.
 
That's the way of radio management... they treat everybody shabbily except the few who are making them lots of money RIght Now.
 
ABC still not quite as bad as some of the companies we live with today. I recall Gene saying on air that he was going and wanted to retire to Hawaii. Something about pointing to a picture of himself in the broadcast studio and saying thats what I used to do. Maybe the folks at ABC were listening?

And even then, they'll do it. When Rick Dees was still raking in the cash for KIIS-FM, his mom died. Rick broke format to play one of her favorite songs in her memory...set it up beautifully. His reward from his bosses? A summons to the GM's office after the show, and a rant which included the phrase "...your f***ing mother".

If you go walking backwards through time to find the era when broadcast management showed respect and appreciation for talent, you'll be walking forever.

This, of course, leads to the reason why most stations in cities of size were unionized in the first place. Unions aren't needed if management treats people decently. I mean, even little KYA 1260 (5kw day, 1kw night) was unionized.

I will take some of the responsibility for the divergence of this thread.

As it was about a terrible DJ...who some alluded to being paid cheap hence why he was bad...to which I replied KOIT is AFTRA so they are getting scale...to which it was revealed that the guy is the PD...then it became how awful the Union is/was.


Many here made valid points...and I by no means said AFTRA is perfect...but again who supports them with dues...we (those of us who are members) do. We still have some power, though it waxes and wanes.

Union members have station reps, we vote, we have recourse...we again cannot always point the finger at everyone else regarding the industry's plight, some of the demise rests with us.

That is all I am saying.

Sorry to diverge again.
