Terre Haute Book

WMGI - I think the talent is perfectly fine, they have done a great job. What they need to do is be coached all in the same direction meaning morning talent, mid-day, afternoon, evening and all be on the same page. Bill does a great job in mid-days, Jay does a great job in afternoons, Kyle same thing, the whole lineup is much better than where they were a year ago.

The biggest issue hands down is music. As I said a million times before, It's not rocket science, but they need to look at the music a little harder. The station plays Birthday Sex during the day! Thats a major no-no in small market CHR's like Terre Haute.

I do like some of the personalities now, but I still think Julie was what mixfm was all about. She was the last of what I think of as mixfm. The music is a bit scattered at times with too much rock and then too much urban. And that Birthday Sex song is not very good.

I'll admit, I glance at this board from time to time, mostly when I need a little chuckle, and I rarely post on here, like I've mentioned before, the majority of these posters are ex-employees, wanna be's who could never make it or those struggling to make it.

Now obviously there is so much knowledge and expertise floating on this little message board, so why waste it here? I mean since so many of you could program WMGI, WBOW, WIBQ and really every other station in this market better than they're being programmed now, why are you posting here? I'm sure the folks at Midwest or Crossroads would appreciate your consulting expertise, on the ability to execute a station and develop talent.

As far as radiomic812 goes, you seem to have a problem with my on-air presentation, and abilities. I was actually the one on Saturday afternoon, and you've mentioned me before. So, since you're obviously so much better at running stations and developing talent, than my current Operations Manager, and other PD's and GM's I've worked with, and for, in Seattle, Evansville, Louisville and Paducah, I'd welcome the chance to talk to you. Feel free to shoot me a e-mail at the station, hopefully you're critique will make me as knowledgeable and talented as you, then one day I can post all day on a message board!

Good points Jay.... We at WIKY are proud of your work and new position at Magic 100.7..... A load of us old guys just tend to be narrow.. I think radio is a balance of new ideas and old ideas... A floating medium of creativity is always a good thing... See what major consultant this week was bashing the all about us stations and not the bold ones who involve the listening audience in the positioning... Humm? But thanks for standing your ground.. "Skip" down US-41...

This is a discussion forum. No one should be rude or specifically call out someone's integrity or morals, but as far as the work at the station, unfortunately, it's fair game. Radio's a weird industry, in that it's a public performance, therefore will be talked about, picked apart and yes, even sometimes praised. You gotta think of it like politics, TV, or sports. How often do you hear second-guessing from some sportswriter, whose never picked up a bat or a ball? It stinks sometimes, but it's part of the gig.

As far as becoming a consultant or programmer at one of Terre Haute's stations, the unfortunate situation that we're all well aware of is that most stations in the Terre Haute market don't have those types of positions. They're not in the budget. Heck, some stations have skeleton crews to begin with, so hiring in extras, possibly consultants, just isnt an option. It's just not like it was 15 or 20 years ago.

The book will always bring highs and lows, goods and bads. And, people will always talk about it. Always evaluate your performance, see what you might be able to improve on and move on. Keep up the good work.

Umm, no we dont. Unless you consider 6pm day time. It was also one of our most requested songs, if not the most requested song this summer. How is a song like Birthday Sex worse than Love Game? Lyrics both suggest Sex, but one actually says it. I think we all know what Gaga is trying to say when she wants to ride your "Disco Stick". Are you one of the consultants who cringe whenever an urban/rhythmic song has success in CHR/Top 40? It was a top 15 song, it has to get played.

Also, we didn't pound the crap out of Diva, it was added as a new music and that was about it for it. Hasn't played since. It's sad becuase it says where music is these days, but a lot of people get adds based on their name. Some times they make it, sometimes not. Each time Beyonce releases a single stations are going to try it. Diva was never in anything other than the "new" music cat.

You can debate whether or not a CHR is too urban all day, but I think we have always done a nice job of being safe during the day time, and letting the urban hits come out at night. At the same time, I have always believed a hit is a hit. Once it is a top 10 or 15 hit, you are not giving your listeners the music they want to hear if you don't play it, or if you just hide it at night. Obviously there are always exceptions, but for the most part, play the hits and you will do just fine. I think we are doing that with our currents. I have always thought if a CHR is sounding too urban in the day, usually you will find it's because of the golds or recurrents, not the currents.

jayontheradio - I have heard your show before, and it's really interactive, phone intensive and you even have interviews on the air, thats what radio is all about. This necessarily isn't "being nice to one person" but saying how the fundementals of real radio are still alive and thats important. The morning show does a good job with this too...so kudos to the entire staff.

As for mixfmkyle, i'm not debating you and saying tha mixfm is broke. However I am saying that its okay to seriously take a look at the music. People pay me to consult, thats what I do. I have heard Birthday Sex by Jeremiah during the day, tough love for ya there buddy!

Speaking of Birthday Sex and Lovegame, yes the message is the same...but one is a clear hit and one is not. Seriously, do you need me to tell you which is which? Point is Lady Gaga is a new Icon, but she is becoming someone with name recognition. Jeremiah might have another hit, but has his song graced Hot AC, Adult Contemporary, Rhythmic, Top 40 and Urban? As for an urban hitting top 15 it should be played, I agree...if its got name power. If its an urban crossover that hits top 15 that has no name recognition then it needs to be dayparted...simple as that!

Beyonce, Diva was spinning (per Radio and Records when it was still in existance) upwards to 25 times a week. YIKES! The song never got out of the top 42 (which is where it peaked in June), and thats a fact. Here is my deal with this song, hits are hits...thats what Z100 and KIIS are supposed to decide, tough love once again. They did play Diva, but lucky if it got even close to 16 spins on the song. Note why it faded so quickly, IT WAS NEVER A HIT! Thats where you need someone who can really listen to a song and say...wow, this is a hit! But that person must also be able to do this crazy little thing called RESEARCH!

Im saying, the jocks are good, the imaging is good, the jingles are good...the music on the other hand, needs to be looked at. Im not playing armchair pd, im just giving free consultation tips which aren't a bad thing. Bill is doing a GREAT job as PD and I applaud him for that, so is Natalyn at WWSY. Midwest has two great programmers on staff, and thats something to be very proud of.

A hit is a hit, but Birthday Sex is not a hit! B2K Bump, Bump, Bump is not a hit anymore, and should have been eighty-sixed along with Darude. As for "PLAY THE HITS AND YOU WILL DO JUST FINE" buzzzzz....wrong!

Stations and especially CHR stations should always be organically grown for the market they serve. One of the best CHR's I have ever heard is WKRQ in Cincinnati. That station gets it...they get Cincinnati, they get the audience. They do play Jeremiah, but late at night. They also play Lovegame by Lady Gaga but you will not hear it in morning drive. They are uber Cincinnati in their music, they understand that the average 28-35 year old female does not want to hear a lot of "rap" music but they can still superserve that audience and build phantom cume with the younger followers.

You should be playing Nickelback, Taylor Swift, Fray, David Cook, Lady Gaga, Beyonce as currents. Pitbull #5, love the song but should it be played during the day...I would 3PM plus that song, but not at lunch!

And here is something to think about...THE 90'S...OMG! Wow, who would have ever thought that those were just as important as your recurrents? And when you play 90's I dont mean MCHamma, I mean Vertical Horizon and Matchbox Twenty...oh wow!

I think everything with Mixfm is good, just find comb the music and it will be perfect!

Hello all radio lovers:) It's Julie...formerly of MIX-FM...haven't been on here before, and was very touched to read the kind things that were said about me...really made my day. Congrats to all my radio friends on the latest book! Radio brought something to my life that no other job could ever do. The relationships I formed with listeners still remains strong. While ratings will get people hired & fired, I'm reminded that the personal connections we build last a lot longer than ratings or jobs. I've been gone from MIX for a little over a year, and I'm still amazed at the e-mails I still receive from listeners...that is a beautiful thing. Glad I could find so many people on here who love radio as much as I do, hope to talk to you all soon:)
