Terre Haute

Well it appears the ratings in Terre Haute did not produce any big surprises. Emmis remained king of the hill , Midwest was about the same, and Crossroads is just there. Seems to me the Crossroads folks would do something to try and improve themselves instead of just waiting from some ego driven LMA or buyers to come along and think they can do it better. However, they do need help and maybe a new owner or LMA with broadcast experience could produce a winner. Sorry to see these properties just flounder like this.

buttonpusher: Surely the reference is to Randy Micheals's Merlin Media? :)

I'm pretty impressed with the number of stations and formats Terre Haute has for a market its size. At some point the Crossroads assets will likely change ownership but I don't see a lot of change. They'll remain almost completely automated with syndicated content. I think TH radio is a little too CHR oriented especially with 104.3 and WMGI basicially broadcasting the same thing.

It's been downhill since WMGI flipped on 01/01/95 but TH radio still offers a lot more than comparably sized communities elsewhere.

i will agree, way too many stations for the size. It didn't seem so bad back when they were all live and there was real competition, but now... just lots of boring. Not that it will happen, but if crossroads went dark would that be an improvement for the market by reducing the number of stations?

When it comes to being live, I'd be willing to bet Crossroads has just as much, if not a little more live and local programming each weekday than Midwest. Of course, Emmis undoubtedly still leads everyone when it comes to being live, as they should with what they bill. As far as weekends, I have no clue.

Without a doubt I prefer live shows, but I also believe if you are talented enough, you can make a pre-recorded show sound entertaining and live. Not a whole lot of that happening in the Terre Haute market though.

I have to backpedal a little and agree with RO77. WBOW is almost all live. That said, only Jules probably makes any decent money. I'm surprised they don't carry Ryan Seacrest. It would fit with their demo. Not my thing, but the kids like him.

I don't think Crossroads demise would be a good thing, it would just mean fewer stations for the market. I doubt that any additional revenue gained by the survivors would represent an improved product. It might result in NPR picking up one of the stations leading to a better signal for that in TH. A standards format would be well received.

I'd like a station that was what WMGI was betwen 1992 and 1995, true AC with national top of the hour news and talented local DJs. I've not heard a station programmed too much better than that was anywhere.

Just an FYI...WMGI is live all day (& night) long except 2 hrs in the midday. As for looking at stations that are live, I agree that is the best thing. One station that hasn't gotten noticed in any of this talk is WIBQ. You can't see it in the 12+ numbers but the truth is, that as far as men 18-49, during the workday...it's #1.

You can't see it in the spot load, either. I understand that Limbaugh has a lot of inventory, but if you're only selling half of it, being #1 in some demo is no advantage.

Disclaimer: I haven't listened to WIBQ during Limbaugh since last summer.

WBOW is voice tracked mornings with Kyle West, Jules is live and afternoons with Jim Osbourn is also voiced tracked. Does it really matter at 13th & Ohio? Note to programmer, find out what B105.7 is doing in Indy and copy it!

PT, I don't listen to the N/T all that often, but when I have listened,WIBQ seems to have a pretty strong spot load during Dave Ramsey and Rush. Rest of the day and weekend when I have listened, it has been almost all PSA's and station promos.

Just browsing their playlists on their websites, it looks like a lot of the music selection is very, very similar. Looks like 102.7 might be playing more new music, but not by much. I admit I'm not an music expert by any means, but based on my quick playlist glance there isn't a whole lot of difference musically. You can't see WBOW's spins on their site, but for what it is worth, the songs listed on their "Top Hits" page matches pretty close with the AC Chart.

To me, Crosssroads' biggest issue is not getting the station more involved in the community. With a staff full of jocks that have been in the market and been successful for several years, they should be taking advantage and putting Party Marty, Jules, Kyle, and Doc out at events a lot more. I haven't heard any of the stations promoting they would be somewhere for quite a while. Until they do that, I think they struggle.

Living close to Parke County, I really love what they have done with 104.9 WAXI. Great mix of Classic Rock. And IU Basketball. (Gotta support the Alma Mater ;D )

I agree, too much new music on WBOW. B105.7 has all eighties weekends and runs the old american top 40 which WBOW dropped. WAXI to me is all over the place, Ventura Highway by America to Crazy Train by Ozzie, and they call this world class rock?? Ok, if they say so...

How about full service AC on FM?

How does WTHI command such big numbers? They have been the major player in that market since the beginning of time and certainly sets the pace for the other to follow.

If I am not mistaken Midwest (WMGI) is live 22 hours of a 24 hour day during the week.
One must note the numbers that Jay and Storm are posting, HUGE! Not bad for a morning show that was carved out from the afternoon guy and a girl from Evansville. I think this show has major potential in the coming years, Midwest needs to hold onto the talent they have.

Crossroads when WBOW launched it sounded great, but they are playing too much new music to really consider themselves a great AC today. Go back to the original formula!

Move Me two hours south and I will put some WIKY into that good processed signal.. And make the 'voices' be 'faces' on every major street corner in TH and 'faces' at every major event and community gathering in Vigo County.... Be Seen, Be Active, Be Everywhere, Then Be Heard on the radio..... I normally would not say that, but, dear Lord, this station should be number #2 behind MAMMOTH-THI with the highest 12+ AQH in any Arbitron market... ::)
