Terre Haute

Emmis is now on the rumors of breakup. A new investor is looking to split the company up and sell of non core assets, which would include HI99 and The River.

Possible...

Emmis sells off Hi 99 and River to a new owner who also picks up WSDM-FM, WAXI-FM, WSDX-AM.

Midwest would still own WMGI-FM, WBOW-FM, WWSY-FM, WIBQ-FM, WPRS-AM, WBOW-AM.

This would have two companies in the market...makes the most sense. Emmis is not looking to expand in the market, UNLESS they look at the AXI/SDM/SDX stations as a way to beef up the cluster and then sell.

Why would Emmis take on several additional stations that are not producing any revenues to speak of and are rim shots in the market. In this case "Less Is More" makes sense to me. Crossroads bailed out on the stations because they had no real management over the years and simply became a minor player in the market. Properly programmed and properly managed these CR stations might be OK but will never be huge money makers.

Fair point. I could see Emmis maybe taking a gamble on 92.7 with the ESPN Format. Move the Colts over From the River, maybe put on the Dan Dakich and JMV shows from 1070 in Indy, they certainly would do a better job selling it than Crossroads has. If they don't want to do sports, they could try a Top-40 or Adult Hits format to try and take a couple chunks away from WMGI.

However, as mentioned in a post above, it seems highly unlikely that Emmis will buy another station in Terre Haute.

As a Parke county guy, I'm not sure who will want WAXI, but it might be best suited for some type of mom & pop operation. Best coverage is in Parke and Vermillion counties, and if you follow the business model of WNDI in Sullivan (Satellite music format with lots of local sports) you might be able to do okay.

Also, I am somewhat intrigued about what format Midwest Communications will go with 102.7. Keep the Adult Contemporary? Rock? Alternative? Another stab at country after failing big time with WIN 98.5? What will they do with 1300? Simulcast WIBQ or 1440? ESPN? Another talk format of some type? Should be an exciting rest of the year for radio geeks like me!

I would guess that Midwest will do the following:
- Keep current formats on all current Midwest stations
- Simulcast WIBQ on WBOW AM
- Keep AC format on WBOW-FM, but give them some resources for a better on-air product -- even if that means more syndication and VT.

If the price is right, I could see Old Northwest Broadcasting buying the rest of Crossroads. I vaguely remember they had an LMA on WSDM and WSDX in the 90s...

Last I heard...

WMGI - 100.7 will remain Adult CHR
WWSY - 95.9 will retool to an Adult Hits
WIBQ - 98.5 will remain FM Talk
WBOW - 102.7 will either go Country or Rock
WPRS - 1440 will remain Classic Country
WBOW - 1330 will become a simulcast of Classic Country

Emmis doesn't want the stations in the long haul, however having those two Class A rimshot signals would benefit the company if they were to sell the market.

See, purchase the sicks for a million, sell the cluster for more!

Makes some sense, would be pretty cool to see Rock on a 50 kw stick again. WZZQ did very very well for a number of years with that on the now silent 107.5. Country wouldn't be a bad second choice, if they do it properly. Maybe they learned a lesson or two with their first crack at it in Terre Haute.

As far as 95.9 "re-tooling" how many times have they done that? As boring and dull as they have it now, it may as well be jockless. Midwest has let it be the worst sounding station in the market for several years, and I can't really figure out why. Not sure how the current sound of the station could be attractive to advertisers, as the station has zero passion behind it. Midwest has a similar format in a lot of their markets, and from what I can see, it appears none of them do very well at all. Kind of a head scratcher to me.

Really kind of surprised they aren't at least considering Adult Contemporary on 95.9. If they don't, they could be handing a lot of workplace listeners over from 102.7 to Hi 99.9

Generally speaking...generally...if a station sucks and has sucked for years it's owners don't care because somehow they are still billing for ads.

Lange took a look and then a pass on buying Crossroads a year or two ago and opted to spend money on the Robinson IL combo instead. But I agree at a cheaper price he'd probably go for what's left of Crossroads this time around.

Doesn't really matter over the long haul. Radio is pretty much dead, and look where it will be in 10-20 years.

I disagree. TV was suppose to kill radio. Cassette / 8 track and Walkman were going to kill radio. Somebody forgot to tell radio it was dead ;D

IMHO there will be some form of OTA "radio" for a long time to come. The cell / telecom companies would have huge capital expenses to allow every car to stream on 95% of the roads in the USA and it will not be "free" or commercial driven like radio.
