terrible radio lately

Here's some of the worst things I've heard on radio in Syracuse lately in no particular order or bias....

- SU football promo's with Matt Park giving the call of OTHER teams touchdowns, has it really been that bad??? don't answer that.

-Krock morning liners with the jock calling the "wrong number voice" a "dumb hoe"... riveting. Is that the funniest part of your show, dialing a wrong number? Please put that out of it's misery.

-Clear Channel's free gas giveaway, please its a company wide event and your not even giving away that much gas. Stop tricking your poor listeners.

-Those horrible commercials for some sale at the fair... listing product after product, brand after brand. Why do Ops and PD's put up with this?? Can these people be spending THAT much on this garbage sale?

-Radio announcers with speech impediments and horrible deliveries.... Reith, Becky Palmer, Lunchbox, Jim Lerch, Beaner and or Ken. Is this town really amateur hour or what?

I agree that Syracuse is better than Utica, I think 10X better is a little much, more like a little better but not much. Syracuse has believed too much of their own press, guys, you're really not all that much better than Utica. WIBX will never re-gain it's rep, would cost to much in this day and age. Besides you can get the news quicker on the net than you can on radio, WSYR included!

Again, I agree. The best part of that whole station starts at 10 and ends at 10. Rainman, Cannon, and Tim Nobal are histerical and the music is great.

I didn't know it wasn't a local contest. They should be more clear.

And the Billy Fucillo ads. Those are horrible.

I am not going to get into a great debate, however, I will respectfully disagree with your assumption that Syracuse is 10x better than Utica. Any professional consultant, scholar, consultant, etc, knows perfectly well that Syracuse ranks at the bottom of the barrel for on-air talent and programming sound for a market of it's size. I will agree that back in the mid 80's to mid 90's, on-air talent in Syracuse and just Syracuse radio in general sounded so much better and was at the top of the list for a market of its size, but not today.

As for Utica...considering the pay scale and market size, several of the on-air people sound much better than many of the Syracuse people and even the overall delivery of the stations, in many cases sounds better.

I will just leave the conversation at that for now, because I do not feel it is proper of necessary to mention stations or list names of on-air talent to whom comparisons can be made, or listing their faults or weaknesses, since everyone works very hard. Some people are just better than others.

When I listen and disect many of the stations and on-air talent, the results can be scarey. It's almost like fingers and nails scratching a blackboard, when listening to some stations along with so many mistakes and stumbles from some of hte on-air talent because they either mumble, cannot ad-lib, cannot even read from a cue-card, or are in love with their voice.

In any event, I welcome, someday, the opportunity to list Syracuse stations and on-air talent, side by side with Utica's and compare their strengths and weaknesses.

Well guys and gals, this is what happens when Ops managers and Program Directors are forced of oversee 3 to 4 stations at a time, they all suffer and most time, the AM side is ignored. Who has time to coach talent? Who has time to sit down and listen to air checks? They are trying to program music, send stuff to the voice guy, sit through endless meetings with half wit General Managers. And in some cases (ie. the news guy on Bug Country in Utica) he's a freind of the sons owners, which explains why he sounds like a borg. BUT YES, i agree with many on this post that Syracuse should sound better then Utica, but I can't say it does. And lets face it, most of the talent in Syracuse used to work in Utica-Rome market. Problems, you bet! Especially Clear Channel, fighting the corparate insanity know as less is more, they are losing big bucks across the board, who has time to worry about talent, when they are all trying to figure out how to make money selling 15) or 05) adlettes. Good god whats up with our industry. Just remember, Radio is not hard, People make it hard!

Syracuse radio needs a good programmer

I can name quite a few Utica stations that sound better overall than all of the Syracuse stations. Its a sad thing and i cant believe im writing it. Do i hear a great sucking sound into Sirius?<P ID="signature">______________

Growing up in Central N. Y. I could hear most of the Utica-Rome and Syracuse stations. Old timers told me WIBX was never that hot to begin with. Even in the golden days of radio. They were only 250 watts on 1230 until they moved to 950 in 1949. I was never impressed with their news dept til Bob Dearborn's group bought the station in the 1980's. Then it sounded excellent.
Actually WTLB had a much better news dept in the 1960's & 70's than WIBX.
As far as top 40 radio in the AM days WTLB in the 1960's was as least as good, if not better sounding than WNDR and WOLF- especially when you figure in they were at least 25 markets smaller with much less of a budget (well, maybe not a smaller budget than WOLF). In the early 1970's WRUN switched from M. O. R. to top 40. Their 5,000 watt signal could be heard clearly from Little Falls to Oneida and beyond. They were one of Radio & Records's first reporting CHR stations. Also, in the early 1970's WOUR-FM came on in Utica. Syracuse had nothing to campare with WOUR and its album rock format for many years. WOUR is truly the original Rock of Cental N. Y.
Syracuse radio for the most part was boring. Management were afraid to try anything that might upset the apple cart. WSYR was just horrible to listen to unless you were over 70. So was WHEN. The most outrageous and entertaining thing I have heard on Syracuse radio to this day is when WHEN switched formats to hot A. C. They brought in Dick Birch. I'll never forget seeing on the back of a city bus...
"Sweet Dick in the Morning -62 WHEN". No one has ever shaken up Central N. Y. radio like those folks did.
Now days it's really hard to compare any markets.
A Clear Channel station is a Clear Channel station (or whatever). Is WSYR any better than WHAM? Is Michael Savage any better in Syracuse than he is in Houston? Is voice tracking better in Elmira than in Boise?
