I was driving just now on 290 north by 43rd st. And KQUB 93.3 and KQQK 107.9 had terrible signal. To much static, on 93.3 I heard in th back ground an English station but could not get it clear. I heard a announcement from these woman singing 93.3!!!

Tropo conditions are kicking in with the warmer weather, and both those frequencies are prone to interference from distant stations...Austin on 93.3 and Victoria on 107.9.

Those are rim-shots and no surprise that the tropo we have -those stations don't have a chance to cover the west and northwest side of Houston.

Didn't KIXS downgrade because of this reason? Looks like it didn't help very much. I was picking up new orleans stations last night at my home place close to Austin, also KQUB was over riding Hot 93. KITE was mixed in as well.

What's really the issue here is the frequent, inescapable tropo-ducting along the coast, and as previously mentioned a rim shot like KQQK doesn't deliver enough signal over most of the Houston area to overcome it. A number of other stations on 107.9 will often give them fits, regardless of the power or height of the distant station. The same sort of thing plagues 93.3.

BTW, KIXS didn't really do a downgrade in the usual sense. They're still a Class C1 at the same site, but at a lower height, although they did kick the power up to 100kW. The reason was KQQK's move to another tower which caused the short-spacing to KIXS, and this took care of it. To be fair, a stronger signal over the immediate area is a good thing and fringe area coverage doesn't mean that much since Victoria is such an isolated market.

Isolated indeed. That area is one of the "dead" spots for FM when you go out of their area which is only around 30-40 miles. Too bad Houston cant squeeze through Lavaca county a little bit better. For my home radios it comes in fine, but for the car its pretty spotty at best.

103.7 has been getting clobbered the past few nights out here in the League City/Friendswood area. It was inaudible at Gessner and Westpark around 7 Wednesday night ... I thought it had either gone off the air or switched formats.
