Terry McGovern's short stint at KYA-FM circa 1993.

Can anyone elaborate on Terry McGoverns short stint at KYA-FM circa 1993. Gene Nelson had been doing the morning show at the combined KSFO/KYA. Terry left K101 (I believe) for some reason. Bob Hamilton then split KSFO and KYA into to separate oldies stations with McGovern at KYA and Nelson at KSFO. McGovern's stint only lasted about a year and was replaced by Goss & Garrett. Let me know if any of these details contain error. I guess what I really wanted to know was why was McGoverns stint so short at KYA ?

Terry was at the combined KSFO/KYA-FM by at least January of 1992. The split into two separate stations was September 28 of that year.

Something I wasn't aware of until I started digging to answer your question---Bob Hamilton, who had programmed KSFO/KYA-FM until 1992, when he crossed the street to KFRC, came back to KYA-FM. It's in the August 13, 1993 issue of R&R.

R&R for the week of August 27, 1993 shows Mike Reily crossing the street from KFRC to become Hamilton's Assistant P.D. and Music Director. That same week, Terry was let go, along with Lee "Baby" Simms and Roger Cary. Paula Kelly and Celeste Perry came over from KFRC.

So this was really about Hamilton wanting his people with him as he tried to (as he put it in the 8/13 R&R) "rebuild KYA-FM".

KYA-FM went Country as KYCY seven months later.

Terry's bio shows 1992-1994 for KYA-FM, but clearly that's not accurate. It also shows him at KRON-TV and BayTV from 1994-1997, hosting a morning show.

There's an important one missing. He had a role in the original American Graffiti movie as "Mr. Wolfe". His IMDB profile is under the name Terence McGovern, but in Graffiti he's credited as Terry. (Looking down the list of credits he appears to have been associated with a bunch of productions, so the need to jock probably went away as his Hollywood career grew.)

Terry McGovern had acting roles that contributed to him getting removed local radio and TV hosting gigs. Here are some of them that McGovern was in between radio gigs.
