It's amazing how many talk show hacks do testimonial commercials...they must really be set up well if they have and use all these products they talk about....I wonder if there are any income tax problems with them if they get breaks or free stuff..just wondering....

I'm not an accountant, but my understanding is the value of the products would be taxable income.
______________

I can't wait until the day that I might happen to be in a position where Bob Crane sends me 3 boxes of the C.C.Radio Plus, 5 LED Trek Lights, and 2 Solar Candles!

Yes, it is. I wonder how many air personalities actually get 1099's and claim it as income, however.

The reason there are so many endorsement commercials is because it has because a business of its own. There are advertising agencies, notably Ad Results, Inc of Houston that specialize in testimonial radio time buys. So they are out calling on clients pushing this as an effective way to advertise. It is profitable for agencies and the radio stations as well as the air personality. And for the most part, it is profitable for the client too. The problem I always had with it was that while there are a lot of mainstream advertisers doing this, there are also some sleazy purveyors of weight loss scams.
______________

I'd rather get a box of Bob Crane's home videos.

Testimonials actually go back a long way, even to Arthur Godfrey and probably way before. In the old Top 40 days, a lot of spots were done live by the jock, but for the most part probably weren't considered or compensated as endorsements.
______________

A l-o-n-g way before Arthur Goofy.

I have a book about the Marx Brothers that includes a print ad Groucho did for coffin nails in the 30s or 40s. The pitch then was that they're good for you!

I'm sure testimonials predated Gutenberg. Maybe the third-oldest profession.

Not bloody likely ... as Richard Dawson might say.

Bob Crane (Col. Hogan) was murdered in 1978.
