Y'all want some commentary? Try this on for size. Spider Harrison has recently played (according to him) "Gary" and the Pacemakers, and "Me and Jewlio Down by the Schoolyard" by Paul Simon, among other mistakes that he has made lately. I would have expected such mistakes from a twentysomething who is not old enough to remember these, but coming from Spider Harrison? The guy is a legend, but mistakes like these make me wonder where he was during what was supposedly his heyday. I'm thinking that there were other similar mistakes, but these are the ones that come to mind right now.
ok and i'm serious..not trying to dis but why is Spider a legend ?? i have to admit I did not listen to him when he was in Nashville years ago...tell me what i have missed ?? I've heard several miscues..no pun intended..from his VT...so far not impressed...i rather imagine this is NOT is genre' of music and is not up to speed on it as some of us that lived and played it when new.but still if your gonna play it..better learn how to say it.....
I believe I got an answer to my question (on that other thread) about why Spider Harrison is on middays, rather than morning drive. I am assuming that he lives somewhere on the west coast, and it would be too early there to do a morning show here.

They even had nighttime listeners around Chattanooga from us who lived outside of three Chattanooga Top 40 stations night time patterns. WLS and WCFL sometimes were hard to pick up. WLAC was kind of a southern version of WLS before FM took over. He was the evening DJ on a powerful top 40 night signal.
Well those years might account for me not hearing..or at least remembering him..I have heard the name over the years mentioned..during that time I was also working days, nights,...whatever at Whin AM/FM...as well as working with a band on weekends. That should have been about the time Bear with the Hair Bradley was at WLAC..I remember Dick Kent as PD there..in fact the band I worked with did a lot of parties over at Hermitage Landing for WLAC...fun times for sure.. ;D
If you read his biography on Hippie Radio's website, it states that he has been living in California for the past two decades and it says nothing about him coming back to Nashville after such a long absent. a thought just occurred to me ....in all the consulting that takes place over various formats...has anyone seen or read where they ask listeners if they prefer live dj's in today's radio ?? we all know cc, cumeless etc are saving bucks for the top br ass by vt a lot of shifts...just wondering if a live jock matters to listeners today as it did say...10/20/30 years ago ?? and to Spiders's credit..at least he does sound up and trying to be excited throwing the vt tracks down...unlike the vt on 97.1 ..but there is still some audio mixing that needs to be addressed..heard Spider doing a talk up..but when the song intro started it was so hot, could barely hear what he was saying.still no substitution for a warm body behind the mic...just can't fake that stuff.....
I think you are right that Spider was at LAC when Dick Kent was PD. They were at their peak of Top 40 back then. Pat - good question on the VT question. I think the only way radio actually evolves is to stay close to home and local. Sat. Radio isn't exactly exciting or better, but it will continue to whittle away at the local FM dial. I think there are certain issues with the quality of sound on the VT on WHPY, but agree that it's better to have that than three repeat death march on the cheap. RQQ had a few months of vigor, but it always gets kicked down and i would guess its not Macs choice. Seems like someone with a lick of ingenuity would figure the simple fact out that you have to invest in your quality to increase your listenership and hence your revenues. The other issues of radio not evolving fast enough is a conversation for another post. Start with mandatory 15 second spots and keep radio vibrant....still to many short cuts that are pushing listeners away. I could go on, but will semi stay on topic. FWIW, Hippy did announce the Davy Jones death yesterday and it wasn't Spider, but I guess a local drop in. Maybe someone knows who it was.
