Well, the book has ended. Any predictions on the numbers this time around?

I'm surprised no one will leave any thoughts to this question.

I would guess probably no big surprises KKYR still #1

OK, here's my thoughts. Some stations will go up, some will go down and some will remain the same. Those that will go up will raise their rates, those that stay the same will not adjust their rates, and at the stations where the ratings go down, management will blame the air talent, and the GM will get a raise anyway. And a new Lexus on lease.

For what it's worth...I think you'll see the Fix rise a bit more and KEWL continue to fall. But, all in all Kicker will remain on top. KTOY may have a bit of bump upwards. KEWL's AM flip to talk will have no impact in this book or any others. Just another waste of a signal and worse yet...a waste for advertisers dollars.

Thumbs up to the idea of live radio on Saturday morning to the guys at Kicker. I was out doing my usual garage sale Saturday activities when a live announcement came on the air about the search for a man accused of alledgely shooting a police officer overnight. I was stunned. Nice job you guys!

When's the book due and do you think they will have to ship it in by boat?

Did the live Saturday morning shift come as the result of GAP Broadcasting's takeover, or was this something that Clear Channel had been doing all along?

I believe KKYR is still voice tracked on Sat mornings but I guess the news guy came in and did the story still a lot more than the others did I'm sure.

It may very well have been voice tracked with the news guy coming in to voice the announcement but at least the effort was made. Whomever made that call deserves a raise...that's what radio is suppose to be about. There is no evil in voice tracking but when the weather or the news calls get someone on the air. There are still people out there that mistakenly believe they can tune into the radio to get the latest information.

I haven't been to Texarkana in a couple of months, so I guess I missed something. Are you saying KNBO switched to talk? If so, I agree about the signal. 1530 barely makes it into the city.

No, KEWL was similcastings it's FM signal on the AM with the same call letters. They switched it over to a talk format and changed the call letter to KTTK. With Texarkana Radio having their AM and carrying all the heavy hitters KTTK's only option was to push local programming. The local talent lasted about two weeks before walking. Since the FM signal is a little weak in buildings, I'm thinking we will see another drop in the FM's numbers because of the AM flip.

Okay, thanks for explaining. I should have caught that one, but I didn't notice the new call letters listed for 1400 (KKTK, by the way). So what are they doing with it now?

Back to KEWL, any progress on the signal upgrade, such as it is? I noticed that it's been almost two years since the CP was issued.

KKYR has always been the leader when it comes to local news and weather in Texarkana. Local people always turn to KKYR in bad weather etc... and they are always on the air, even if their other stations are off. I know durring the ice storm they actually lost money paying for generator fuel and paying outside engineers to keep it on the air. I guess Gap decided to use contract engineers again. You would think with 5 stations they could keep a full time engineer on staff. When I left Clear Channel 1 1/2 years ago, we had a good engineer with split responsibilities in Texarkana and Tyler. He was with us 2 or 3 days a week and we always kept him busy with something!! Who knows what's up with KEWL. That 50KW upgrade has been in the works for years. They really need the boost, especially in the morning when reception can be iffy. Speaking of 25KW stations, KPWW missed a golden opportunity to increase to 50KW when they also owned the station on 96.1 in El Dorado and let it go to 100KW. Good greif, they could have increased El Dorado from 3KW to 25KW and upgraded Texarkana to 50KW. I would much rather have a 50KW in Texarkana than a 100KW in El Dorado. KPWW may have to deal with that in the future as Texarkana grows. The tower is already several miles west of town as it is actually licensed to Hooks. Of course everything is moving west into Texas. Good for Power!!!

I worked at KCMC back in the 80's and KKYR was the envy of just about everyone on staff. They are one of the few stations that continue to do well with local information despite the Clear Channelization of the market. I thought KTFS had a shot when Jim Weaver was there to really do something in the news/information arena, but those efforts went by the wayside.

I believe strongly that a local station with a local morning talk show host could take this market by storm. Texarkana is a largest enough town and politically minded enough for a local talk show to thrive. But, it will take dedication on the management's part along with lots of promotions. The mindset these days is that AM's are just ugly red headed step children to their FM siblings. No one wants to put out the cash it would take to have a really strong AM down here. This town has no dedicated television station and only a newspaper for news. A strong local news/talk station would be incredible in this market.

It seems as if the AM band in Texarkana has been neglected for so long that in many listeners minds it isn't even an option anymore. There is no local programming on AM, and the ones that have tried it jump shit after a couple of weeks. I always thought that Texarkana Radio should have taken 107.1 to a news/talk/sports format, and then put something else on 940. KOSY probably could have had a chance several years ago, but the ownership over the years was content to let them simulcast KKYR and just kind of exist. KCMC will always be my favorite AM station. That 740 signal was just so neat to be on for me having been a long time fan of KTRH in Houston.
