Texas Roadhouse on KILT drastic changes

I am very upset with KILT for the drastic change to the Texas Roadhouse that had run for 5 hours on Sunday night with Leslie T. Travis. This was the only show on the radio that I regularly listen to and make a point of tuning in to catch at least some of it. There is precious little other outlet for "Texas Music" on the dial here in Houston besides the Texas Roadhouse and sometimes on KPFT. While Rowdy Yates and his Country Gold Show are fine (which replaced the Sunday Texas Roadhouse), the "Gold" duplicates what is already available on Country Legends 97.1..although the Country gold show is vastly superior to 97.1 since Rowdy does a great job and it outperforms having no disc jockey and no information about the songs or connections to the listeners. However, the Texas roadhouse did not need to be sacrificed. I see on the KILT web site that the Texas Roadhouse has been moved to Saturday night and compressed from 5 hours to 2 hours, now 10 to Midnight and that Steve Rixx is now hosting instead of Leslie T. Travis. There is no one in Houston radio more knowledgeable about Texas Music than Leslie T. Travis, however, and her style of mixing in inside information about the bands with requests from callers during the Texas Roadhouse will be sorely missed. I read on Leslie T.'s blogs that she had no role in this, this was all management decision, and that she was surprised. http://leslietstexas.blogspot.com/

I am very disappointed with KILT for this decision in not retaining Leslie T to handle the Roadhouse and reducing it down to 2 hours from 5.

I did not hear the new show this weekend on Saturday as I had no idea that the switch had occurred until I tuned in Sunday and heard Rowdy Yates in the Sunday evening time slot. I do wish Rowdy success in his new time slot but lament the cost in losing the full Texas Roadhouse.

There is a great admiration and respect that I have for Leslie T. Travis. We've worked together for several years now, and I consider her a friend. We are both Texas/Red Dirt music freaks, and have been supporting the cause for many years. I will continue to consult her on matters regarding the show, and she'll continue to post the show's song list every week beginning with this weeks show. I certainly hope that you'll tune in this Saturday night and check out the Roadhouse in it's new slot. The alternative is NO Texas Roadhouse, and I think we can all agree,,that would be worse.

In Other Words...thanks but..we (in suits) care very little about your feelings... Thanks for listening!

I totally agree with HoustonListener as there is no way to shrink down 5 hours of content into 2 no matter how good on the board you are or how much you know. I remember listening to H&H back when my Dad drove me to school in Jr. High. KILT was our connection. They are the ones who pointed me in the radio direction. To see that same station (surely not the same mgmnt team) make this kind of decision saddens me. I don't think as the post said about "Gold duplicates what is already available on Country Legends 97.1" I think that "Solid Gold" puts us back into the 60s 70s 80s of country when the roots ran deep and songs were stories and an extension of ones life expierences of which all could relate. Not that they aren't like that today but there wasn't the glitz and glamor that accoumpanies the cookie cutter, overnight, american idol stars of today. After all, I think Texas Singer/Songwriter Corry Morrow sums it up by saying "Well the songwritin's left up to old hillbillies, Young hippies and rednecks and girls like Miss Emmylou, I'm too young to have a point of view, But I just want to be a part of fightin' the Nashville blues".

Dude,,,I've NEVER been a "suit",,and I won't EVER be!! I certainly hope you weren't including me in that comment. Anybody that knows me,,,knows that I've been around, and supporting, Texas/Red Dirt music since the late 90's when everything started hitting. Leslie and I both knew that our people would be upset by the move/shortening of the Roadhouse show, but losing it completely would have been like severing a limb for both of us. We know that the fans of OKOM are passionate and loyal to the extreme, because we are fans!! There are some great ideas floating around here that hopefully will bring more of the music, you want to hear, to you. Great song reference at the end of your post,,,,"Nashville Blues" is one of the songs on the show Saturday night,,hope you listen. Don't lose the faith brother,,,it ain't over til it's over,,and IT AIN'T OVER!

I will vouch for Steve. He rarely wears shirts that have buttons, much less jackets or ties.

I, for the record, am HAPPY about the change, and the return of "Country Gold" to it's original day and time.

For those who don't know, in November we will celebrate two years of successful syndication via Westwood One, and a year from now, the show itself will celebrate 20 on the network!

Probably a corporate thing since "Country Gold" is owned by Westwood One which is partially owned by CBS. They probably get the show for FREE and the "Texas Roadhouse" cost them money. Either way, I feel that Steve does a great job with the new show. Did you catch it last Saturday night? I too love Texas music but at least KILT is trying to keep Texas music alive.

It's hard to understand why KILT made this move.

1. Beer sponsors have been happy for years to sponsor Texas artists on radio.

2. Leslie is a talented, knowledgeable and engaging host.

3. Just because Westwood One and CBS have a new syndication agreement doesn't mean CBS-owned KILT should drop money-making programs. Corporate agreements don't supercede profit motives.

In fact, CBS and Westwood are parting ways in several aspects (it's common knowledge that CBS no longer runs Westwood).

Conclusion: 93Q needs to give Leslie Travis a call.

I have been getting a ton of calls and emails about this - all ANGRY.

I'm not gonna say it will never be as it was...I did have the chance to come back to KILT after the death of KIKK and do the show. So there's always hope. I mean they didn't fire me altogether. (But these early Sunday's are killing me!!)

I have a pretty good idea about why the changes were made and none had anything to do with the ratings for the Roadhouse or the lack of loyal listeners or Rowdy's show being owned by corprorate.

But ya know, I've learned never to try and second guess management in my 25 + years in radio.

Why would 93Q call Leslie 93Q plays NO TEXAS MUSIC at all never has since Cox Radio took it over

Gee, CBK, if there's money in it, maybe 93Q should look into it (see my earlier post). There are Texas sponsors who are interested in good ol' Texas music. That's all I'm trying to say.

They should hire her to be the PD of the new Texas Music station they should put on 97.1. :D :D

Talk about giving it to KILT. A good mix of classic country and modern Texas country would make a KILLER station. All the artists that make up this :Texas Music Revolution", are all big fans of old country, as are the fans of it.
