Texting services--what's best??

at a college station...can someone explain the texting services where listeners can text in comments and jocks/talk hosts can send out texts or answer questions on air. Also any companies you would suggest using or staying away from??
Do i need special equipment or does it show up on a web page?

Why not use twitter? Just as easy to use and free...and you're typical college audience will have mobile access.

Have you received any answers to this (outside of this board)? I would like to know too.
