Re: The return of the WBCN/WAAF war
The WBCN rumble was definitely "fixed" many times over. There was a Rumble with "Rods & Cones" wowing the audience. They lost. Some really great bands lost. My band and Girls Night Out were two of the only bands to say "NO" to performing at the Rumble. It was a cardinal sin not to play. My band was signed to the French
New Rose label (which opened the door for Willie Loco, The Lyres, John Hovorka and so many other bands).
There was too much to risk having a signed band perform - do potentially as well as Rods & Cones, and find out that the judges had pre-chosen the Winner.
Nik, you weren't in this town back in the day. I have a signed letter from the leader of Gangreen that Oedipus
called him to play the Rumble because they were chosen to win in advance. They did win, over Johnny A.
Now I like BOTH bands, however, Johnny A is still selling tons of records today (on Steve Vai's label, "Favored Nations"). Gangreen might do a reunion show or two, but they just didn't have the lasting power of Johnny A,
who went on to record an album with Peter Wolf.
The letter was published in a local magazine and Oedipus never sued Gangreen for defamation of character.
Most of the people agreed that Johnny A had edged out Gangreen, but Oedipus' decision was final.
That wasn't the only rumble - anyone in the loop knows of a MAJOR fix that was in prompting a major force in the city to say in disgust "How does this help anyone?" This was years before Nik came to town - and the information is out there if you go looking.
The Rumble is fixed. Saying "No" to it is what started the whole problem with Oedipus. We used to be civil to each other - heck, I bought him dunkin donuts & coffee; used to drive the dude home. Heck - Oedi said to me at The Rat one night when "The Nerves" were playing "Count, walk me out so they don't see me leaving."
No problem, Oedi. Those were different times. I had to leave too - the band couldn't cut it. The difference between me and Oedi? I tell someone to their face "Hey, you can improve by doing this." Oedipus slips out the door. Just two different styles, that's all. There is evidence that 3 Rumbles were "Fixed" and Nik Carter was not in Boston when it happened. Maybe they cleaned the act up when Nik got here. Hasn't Nik stated on the air that the place was a den of sin before he got there and he wished he was there during those days (Nik said it jokingly, of course, and paraphrased here, but Nik did reference that on the air, didn't he???)
