Thank you, Oldies 103

Thank you Oldies 103 ... for not playing the 50's and early 60's anymore. And for playing the same crappy 103 songs over and over. Thank you for getting so bad you finally made me get off my rear end and get XM.

Now when I want real oldies (the ones you don't play anymore, and the ones you never played), I have a place to turn to.

I haven't listened to you in a month ... you are not missed.

They play a lot more songs than that. While there is a regular rotation, there's also shows like
Beatles at 10, Thu Night Countdown, and Lost 45s that do offer variety.

Many oldies stations start with Beatles, etc. and wiped out 50s and early 60s since they feel
this is where the demo is. There were some alternatives out there (like Scott Shannon's
True Oldies Channel but even that I think has moved away from that era? or it has on certain
stations)

XM and Sirius (and HD) do indeed offer earlier "oldies" and there are other places too like
WABC Sat nights, etc. 103.3's ratings usually are fairly good, esp. considering oldies is usually
on weaker stations (or not on at all) in some markets.

They'll be sending the "You're Welcome" card in the form of an XM bill every month for the rest of your life.

Oh, in addition, where have you been? A month? We've not played 50's and EARLY 60's in nearly 6 - 10 years! 103 songs? Can we get the numbers straight on this board ... the other day someone said we play 3000, someone else mentioned 400, geez, shall I give you a print out of the entire library? Pity the poor P-1 that loves those "same crappy 103 songs over and over."

I do have XM too, but I rarely listen to the decades channels--maybe once in awhile. I like the
classic country & country stations, major league baseball, and other specialty channels.
People don't have to commit to it for a long period. I do month-to-month and can dump it when
I want.

I agree...I'm only 28 and I love me some old soul and the old 50's and 60's music. I've had XM for years, and now I've even added Sirius for E-Street Radio. I'd rather pay to hear good music than listen to the same 103 songs they play every other day.

Yes, I know it's been awhile since you've played 50's early 60's for a while .. the one month is how long I've had XM.
As for the 103 songs... did nobody get the biting sarcasm? ???

I don't buy into all the research ... people who grew up listening to Top 40 in the 60's and 70's heard 50's and early 60's as oldies. You can't tell me that classics like "Jailhouse Rock" or "Hound Dog" don't fly... Oldies 103 won't play those, but they play a REMIX of "A Little Less Conversation"? ???

As for the "you're welcome" card that I get every month.. yeah, I can drop them any time I like. But at $12.95/month, it costs me less than my monthly coffee budget ;D

Now ... what are their most overplayed songs?

"Does Anybody Know What Time It Is" - Chicago
"Love Train" - O'Jays
"Long Train Running" - Doobie Bros.

Amen to you J.J.

Never ceases to amaze, some won't be happy unless they have something to whine about.
The Oldies format needs to move forward, otherwise you're playing to the nursing home.

103 songs, 3,000 songs. Who cares, you don't like, leave. We need to cater to the thousands that do.

And how bout the attitudes of,
Your station MUST cater to ME!!!!
It's all about ME!!!!
You owe it to ME!!!!
If you lose ME, you'll be nothing!!

May I suggest the following:

1. If it's not to your taste, spend a few of bucks (thats been in your wallet since the 70s) buy an I-pod, or pay the monthly for satellite. 8)
2. Enjoy the comfort and scent of a woman. ::)
3. Add more bran to your diet. :)

By the way, Dunkin Donuts French Vanilla Ice Coffee is THE BEST!
BONUS-----keeps me regular!! ;D

"Does Anybody Know What Time It Is" - Chicago
"Love Train" - O'Jays
"Long Train Running" - Doobie Bros.

Funny you should pick those three... three of my all time favorite songs. Play 'em all ya like.

Not whining, just stating my opinion. (Isn't that what these boards are for?)

I don't take that attitude at all. The only stations that cater to ME are my Ipod/PC/CD player.

Not saying they're bad songs. Just that there are thousands of others...

The great thing about radios are the on/off switch, and the seek/scan button.

Has WODS and most of the oldies stations re defined oldies to be mid to late 70's .. you bet. Those songs can't be oldies I listened to them in high school and college! And I am NOT old!!!!

As far as the number of songs on a playlist, a broadcast station has less than a sat-caster, but that is out of necessity since there are no commercials on the 60's station on XM (or as Howie likes to call it his magic radio) they have to have more songs to keep from being repetitious. As much as I like WODS, WBOQ, WZLX, WROR, WATD, and other staions I do have a liking for the XM 60's on Six channel and the AM drive guy... very personality driven format and the hosts are walking PhonoLogs. ( you youngsters can google PhonoLog if you'd like) There is stuff I hear on XM I have not heard anywhere else in years.

I would suggest that "oldies" is whatever your target audience listened
to while they were of high school/college age...

See if you can hear the oldies station out of Portland, ME. 100-something. (forget the call...)
I held it from N.Conway, NH to Sunday River, ME, all the way to around Newburyport, MA

I've had XM for a year and a half. It has almost completely eliminated my FM music listening. That said, 50% of my radio time is still spent on local stations - WBZ, WRKO, WQRC etc. for the local news and talk shows. As to music, most FM stations try to be a jukebox - but XM can do it a lot better with since they can go after the niche's better.

As pointed out - $12.95 a month (I pay it yearly) - is not much. A magazine and cup of coffee at the South Station is more than that (and only lasts an hour, tops).

As for Oldies 103 - I would like a deeper playlist, more jock interaction, something to make it more interesting. The XM 60's on 6 morning show is so much fun. Not vulgar, just fun. Contests, jingles which go with the era, etc. I would love for Oldies 103 to flip their call letters to WBZ-FM, pull out the old WBZ jingles and emulate the sound of the station in days gone by. That, to me, would be a lot more intesting to listen to.

OTOH, not everyone who grew up in the 60s & 70s wants to be stuck there for the rest of their life. I'm in my mid (ish) 50s, and there are only a handful of pre-Sgt. Pepper songs that have any relevance to me today. If I never hear another 50s song again that'll be OK with me.

Remember when your cable bill was only 12.95?

Plus, get it in your second car or for the house, you either have to keep taking it with you or pay a second subscription fee.

Answer: If you were a 17 yo listening in 1965....you are 60 now....and are no longer in Oldies 103.3's target.

BTW...As someone who is younger than 60 ;-) and was a Top 40 listener in the 70's.....I didn't hear oldies being played from the 50's & 60's when I was a teenager. Oldies on a Top 40 station were at most 4 years old.

I'm sure I never heard "Jailhouse Rock" or "Hound Dog" played on my Top 40 station.

Yea, but if you were an 8 year old, transistor radio pressed to
your ear, listening to the Beatles invasion (as I was!) as current music,
"oldies" then were, indeed, 50's greaser music... ;D
