Thank You, Rochester

I have to tell you that the two recent imports from Rochester aren't exactly setting Buffalo TV on fire.

Tricia Cruz may have the most annoying voice this side of John DiTullio - or Julie Fine of WKBW. If she's a smoker, she needs to quit NOW. Being bi-lingual - which is a big plus in a market with a growing Hispanic population - won't be useful if you can't TALK.

Dave McKinley isn't as annoying, but he's quirky to the point where you stop listening to the story, and start listening to the way he speaks. He's not a bad reporter, but I don't see him making big money in front of the camera. He might want to think about moving toward a news/management track.

I guess it could be worse. At least you didn't send us Lia Lando. Not that we don't have our share of "bubble-headed bleach blonds"...

Hey always happy to help our neighbor to the west.

It could have been worse however. We could have sent you me.

Think about it. Born in Williamsville (when it was farm country) and I am a die-hard PATRIOTS fan. Which I am sure would endure me to all the Bills fans.

Fortunately for Buffalo TV I have a face for radio, plus I am banned from going anywhere near the Corning Glass Museum for fear of breaking crystal or other glass-related items.

Mark--I am not trying to be imflamatory, but I have to state something I have noticed about you in a lot of your threads: You like to insert yourself in them for whatever reason. I have no idea who you are but from what I have been able to gather through your posts, you used to work in radio and maybe tv (but not commercial tv?). With all due respect what does your experience/hometown/etc. have to do with practically every thread, in particuliar this one? This is called "thread-jacking"...and such topic changes just aren't relevant. We get the picture, you worked in the market...move on. I am not the board police, but man everytime I come on here I have to read your bio you give. Unless you worked on-air in tv in Rochester or Buffalo, your personal information isn't needed for this topic or many others on here (since this has become a tv board almost specific to Rochester).

On to the topic at hand. I would suggest that if Tricia's last name wasn't Cruz she would certainly not be working in Buffalo, and likely wouldn't have made it to Rochester. She is very, very mediocre. As far as McKinley goes, he schtick gets very old at times. I wouldn't be suprised to see him back in Rochester before you know it with his tail between his legs.

Boy some people just don't have an appreciation for a sense of humor.

So, if I understand you correctly, I should refrain from posting anything unless it's related to the subject under discussion? If that is your argument than I would strongly suggest that you look over the numerous posts I have responded to over the past few years plus topics generated by yours truly that others have replied to.

Apparently you are not aware that I did work in TV here in Rochester for a number of years at WXXI. Does that mean , under your guidelines, someone has to currently, or have worked in television in order to post here ?

You're correct when you wrote that you are not the board police. If I want to inject some humor into a conversation, it's my right to do so. Not to be nasty, but if you don't like what I write, then don't read it. Or if you are offended, then report it to the moderator and let them decide.

I hardly think they will remove my posts just because you don't like what I write.

Prompter has been flying stealth for awhile---not anymore. First of all, Mark Giardina is a respected broadcast veteran in the Rochester
market, and while I may not always agree with his posts, he is very credible and has solid observations about the market here. Secondly, the Buffalo market is no great shakes. I'll take Rochester any day. Our area is a heckuva lot nicer to live than what Buffalo has to offer and not for nothing, from a frontline standpoint, their on-air talent is no better than Rochester's. In fact I think the Rochester anchor's are, for the most part, better. Say what you want about Dave McKinley, the guy can write circles around anybody reporting news in this region. His institutional knowledge of the area is second to none. He is quirky as hell, but that's what sets him apart from everyone else. This is a dime-a-dozen business, Dave does not fall into that category.
That's all for now...but stay tuned for some bombastic Prompter Postings in the next couple of weeks. This forum has been boring as hell just about the entire summer, I'm about to change all of that.

If your "Prompter Postings" are as perceptive as your evaluation of the Buffalo and Rochester markets, we'll need to contact Retsof for an additional shipment of "Prompter Accompanyments".

Rochwatcher:

At least Mark Giardana signs his name to his observations.

Enough with your personal attacks in this forum.

Mark--Unfortunately you missed the point. No one was attacking your sense of humor or what you contribute. I was rather pointing out that on several other topics for months now, you seem to love to remind people you worked in the industry--almost as if it gives you more credibility on the board. We get it--you worked in the field, enough already! As far as WXXI, I specifically said commercial TV, not a station that provides Yanni concert marathons. If we cared a lot about public tv and radio, there would be a lot more threads about them on here. Unfortunately they aren't quite as exciting (likely because of the lack of news). But to your point, I don't have to read your posts, and I won't any longer...

I don't see a problem with either Mark Giardina, or anyone else ,expressing pride that they are from a certain community (in Mr. Giardina's case born in Buffalo) or proud of the fact that they once worked in broadcasting.
Why Rochwatcher issued a personal attack against Mark is very petty.
I would be interested to know if Rochwatcher is currently, or ever was, employed in broadcasting, or is he just a wannabe?

First let me thank those of you who came to my defense on this board. I appreciate it very much.

Heaven forbid I mention my background again, but I did work in commercial television as well; as a news writer for Channel 10 back in the 1980s, so I do have some experience in that field.

Even though you don't care, there are people who consider public television a very good source for news. Perhaps these people figure it is better to have in-depth discussions about such topics as New York State's deficit; Aid to Education; Mandated state programs and their impact on communities like Buffalo and Rochester rather than watching a commercial TV newscast that jams several stories into their A segment; most of them dealing with vacant house fires, homicides, or some Entertainment Tonight fluff piece.

By all means enjoy what ever pleases you when it comes to news and information. But don't belittle others who might desire more.

So, if a member of this forum has never been in broadcasting, then he/she is just a wannabe?

I have never been on-air, but part of my job is to purchase radio and TV air time for the company I work for. It was not my intention to be critical of anyone posting on here who has never worked in broadcasting. What I was meaning to say is that we know Mark Giardina had , or has, a background in broadcasting, yet we know nothing about Rochwatcher, who is so critical of Giardina mentioning his prior experience. If you believe Rochwatcher, Giardina brings up his experience in every post; which is far from the truth.

OK - thanks for clarifying. I've run into a few here who do subscribe to that false dichotomy.

Actually I think it was Rochwatcher who did the "Thread jacking"!

Mark makes some really good comments. I might not always agree (that would be boring anyway) but I enjoy his posts.

The one about a face for radio hit close to home. I was talking to WROC radio in the '76 and they wanted some pix of me for a possible TV weather spot. I sent them, in fact had some taken. What was I thinking?

Okay so now I have hijacked the thread....sorry!

EXACTLY. Also, I'll take Dave McKinley back any old day of the week, for the same reasons prompter listed above.
