Thanksgiving Parade On CBS????

Channel surfing this morning I saw a parade on WCBS. Then I saw it was the Thanksgiving Day Parade from New York ?????? How can that be. Yes , it was not billed as "The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" , NBC obviously still owns that and the coverage differed quite a bit,no close-ups of the ballons or the musical numbers in Hearld Square ect. When the light fixture fell on 2 spectators the cameras covered it like a news event, ambulances and all. I guess CBS thought they had nothing to lose.

CBS has been running this ertzatz coverage for years. I am wondering why lawyers haven't gotten involved yet.
______________

It's a public street. Can't stop anybody from taking pictures on CPW.

However, when there is a licencing deal and money involved one would think that broadcasting it would be a bit wrong. Take the Marathon for example, there was one official broadcast and zero unofficial ones. Sure, it was covered by local newscasts, but there was no dueling live coverage.
______________

If what happens here in Boston with our marathon each April is any indication, the organizers have not sold exclusive TV rights within the Boston area, but instead, allow any local TV station that wants to cover the race to do so.

Although the organizers of the New York Marathon sold exclusive national TV rights to NBC, WNBC-4 probably got non-exclusive rights to produce a local telecast. Perhaps no other New York TV station was interested in doing their own coverage. After all, I think WCBS-2 and WNYW-5 would have to pass since I believe the finish of the race would conflict with the first half-hour of their respective networks' NFL pregame shows.

Going back to the Macy's Parade, NBC may have gotten exclusive rights to have their anchor booth and main camera positions in front of Macy's, and on Macy's property. Other networks could set-up their own cameras and anchor booths at other locations along the route.

I wonder what would stop CBS (or ABC for that matter) from setting up their main camera positions and anchor booths next to and just to the south of Macy's, but not on Macy's property.

Walt Disney World Thanksgiving Parade

On another subject involving parades, ABC used to air the WDW Thanksgiving Day parade, but they stopped a couple of years ago. Anyone know why? Low ratings? How long did ABC run the parade coverage from Florida?
______________

I thought they had a CHRISTMAS parade, not a Thanksgiving one.

And isn't Regis and Kelly the hosts of that parade (and broadcast)? I thought I heard ol' Reeg saying that he and Kelly went down to Orlando this weekend to meet with the production staff (could be read as they filmed it this weekend to broadcast on Christmas).

Those Disney parks have parades for just about every holiday. They had an Easter parade for some years, but not recently. As far as Thanksgiving is concerned, they did have a spot on CBS' now defunct format just a few years ago.
