That bad time of year

Its that time of year when the wife and I have trouble finding a music station to put on in the car. WOGL, WJBR and the Bee all have 24/7 Christmas. So I came back to the car after being in a store and found her listening to WSTW, something she rarely does. So I guess that is now our only choice until January. Her in her 50's, me in my 60's and we have to listen to 93.7?

Jhguthlac: In your car, you might be able to get 96.1 WSOX - Greatest Hits - York PA. I haven't listened lately so I don't know if they have gone Christmas Music 24/7 yet. The other choice for me music wise on radio, is WTRI 90.1 or 107.7 (Wilmington translator) for Classical by day and Jazz at night or maybe WVUD 91.3 (some of their music - Classical and some of the Blue Grass I like, sometimes I hear folks music there which too is fine, a lot the other stuff they air I don't like at all).

Also WVLT 92.1 Vineland, NJ has Oldies.

Sometimes WGLS 89.7 Rowen Univ Radio NJ has Oldies.

A station my wife really likes, so maybe this will work for you and your wife, 95.7 (don't know the calls - Ben -FM), or even 92.9 WRDX (Tom-FM).

However, I've been listening to Sports Talk more in the car and at work (1290 WWTX Dan Patrick, Jim Rome, or the Loose Cannon's) or 96.5 WPEN-FM, and to a lesser degree to, WIP-94.1 and depending on my mood and what's being discussed or aired to NPR 90.9 WHYY-FM (Morning Edition, Radio Times, Talk of the Nation, Fresh Air, and All Things Considered).

I'm just burned out on political talk so other than Allan Loudell's noon news/interviews, I've not been a regular at WDEL as AL's too extreme in some of his views, especially his anti-God views (makes me think of Bill Maher thus a deal breaker for my ear) and Rick is a Rush wannabe (if I want a right wing Obama is evil rants, etc,[which I don't] I would tune in to Rush on WILM and hear the master of that sort of political talk).

Frankly, when I want music while driving I just pop in a CD and listen to my private collection as radio just doesn't play what I want to hear other than Classical, Jazz, or sometimes Greatest Hits.

Sad thing is, you and I are past the age that the advertisers even care if we listen. As you know, they don't even consider us a bonus if we listen. So, at least for my ear, spoken word programming on radio (now on AM and FM) is what I seem to be listening too more and more other than Classical Music, Jazz, and sometimes Greatest Hits. So I guess what I'm saying is its only going to be more difficult for folks like you and I to be Music listeners on OTA radio.

My car didn't come with satellite radio and the idea of paying a monthly fee, plus a rather hefty price to get a satellite radio and have it installed, another fee, in my older car isn't too appealing, so CD's seem the far less expensive route for music in the car, especially since the CD player in my car sounds quite good.

Tried XPN?

Mike: Thanks for the suggestions. Its been so long since I've listened to Vineland, I had forgotten about them.

Jack Daniels: WXPN is often too far off mainstream for us.

I have also joined the switch to sports talk. How often can you listen to the same attacks on Obama. Of course the attacks on Vick and Andy Reed get old after awhile too!

Jhguthlac, that's why I prefer WWTX 1290's Fox Sports Radio (Dan Patrick and Jim Rome). They are discussing national sports topics, so Philly gets mentioned, but its not the main thing as it is on either 97.5 WPEN-FM or 94.1 WIP-FM. For my ear WWTX is far more interesting, as I agree with you, the attacks on Obama get old, as do the attacks on Vick and Reed.

There's country—but I guess one would have to have a passing fancy for country in the first place, wouldn't one? At least you could still hear Taylor Swift.

WDAS-FM could possibly be a consideration. I am not a regular listener, but have to admit to being surprised by some of the songs I've heard during my car radio's scanning stops—really not that much different from what you'd hear on WOGL, on the R&B side, of course. In fact, it reminds me of that brief Jammin' Gold period on 95.7 a few years back.

As for the Christmas stations, maybe they would be a lot more tolerable if they did something about their playlists. They're all identical. Not much can be done about that, but what's really aggravating is the repetition. What do all these stations have—libraries of about 50 songs? I have presets for 98.1, 99.5, 100.7 (WLEV), and B101, and I'm constantly switching back and forth. Within 10 minutes of turning the radio on, I can guarantee I will hear Bruce Springsteen's "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." Then, within the next half hour, one of them, but more likely, two of them, will play "Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney, "Step Into Christmas" by Elton John, "Last Christmas" by Wham, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey, or "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by the Jackson 5.

That kind of programming might have worked back when stations had their 36 hours of Christmas, but now that we have 36 days of Christmas, it's inexcusable—and just plain lazy—when you consider all the different Christmas music that's now available.

You might enjoy WMID AM 1230 and 1340 out of Atlantic City.

Christmas? Not at Oldies Radio 1620 (www.oldiesradio1620.com), we're not playing the Christmas music during our regular programming but will be running special shows just for the day. Running ALL Chrsitmas music for a month rather then mixing it with the regular music is really sort of a waste.

Dave, I agree. I loved the old B/EZ WJBR approach. Starting with the first Sunday of Advent, one Holiday song per hour. After the 4th Sunday, heavy into the more religous Christmas music. I have had so many deaths in the family at Christmas time, the 100% appraoch starting at Veterans Day does not work for me.

If you're looking for religious Christian music, the new 950 WKDN-AM [Family Radio] is now doing their Christmas religious music.

Also, another good source for religious Christian music (year round) is online at Lutheran Public Radio.

I'm listening now, wonderful sacred Advent/Christmas music. It's also available on Live 365.
