That explains it...FM sports

...There's really not room for four SportsTalkers in Houston, despite the market size, but no one wants to cry uncle... KGOW has made a lot of noise since it signed on, but has awful ratings to show for it. The station has been revamping its style in the past few months, but the numbers aren't going up...

1. Recently, Adam Clanton from KBME remarked that it is indeed the market size that warrants the number of sports radio stations that they have. For those of you keeping score at home, New York and Chicago have two each, and there are three in L.A.

However Houston is at best a lukewarm sports town, with lots of bandwagon fans. Problem is worse these days as all the pro teams currently stink, with the exception of the AHL Aeros. The audience is spread too thin.

2. It should be noted that when KGOW first launched, their signal was not encoded for PPM, so their "awful ratings" when they first started were actually no ratings at all.

Despite adding PPM encoding, and building a huge upgrade to the night signal, KGOW's ratings are still abysmal.

We'll let the Cleveland folks get back to their local discussion. ;D

I hope CBS decides to do a (Indians/Browns/Cavs/Buckeyes) Postgame Show. I'm sure whoever they decide to host would wipe Brinda off the map during those Postgame shows. Plus, I hope Booms will actually keeps job for more than a year.

If what Arbitron says is correct (8 of every 10 radio listeners are on FM)...it just makes sense to take your format where the most potential listeners are.

I'm not sure how to take this quote. Do you mean exclusively FM or listen to FM stations at some point (thus probably including AM stations?) I say that because it seems WTAM is really the big dog in Cleveland, and they have the rights to the Indians and Cavs correct? Also WMMS has the rights to the Browns and any conflicting games that would be broadcast on WTAM. Other than reaching into some real deep pockets, why would any of the media management persons at these organizations come to the conclusion that it would be beneficial to move to a station/company that is unproven (the new station I mean) and as of late been lacking in ranking with regards to many demographics across their cluster?

Not saying it can't happen, I just think if I were in charge of the promotions of nay of the big 3 teams in Cleveland I would be wary of moving away from Clear Channel, especially WTAM for their ratings, and WMMS for their farther reaching FM signal (assuming there's no eventual flip between 98.5 and 92.3.)

8 of every 10 people who listen to radio listen to FM stations, 2 listen to AM stations...literally.

The sportstalk will be on 98.5.

Only Clear Channel hopes they can keep all 3 pro-sports teams on WTAM (or WMMS if TAM's in conflict). For any one of the 3 pro-teams...the ideal is to be on an all-sports station who carries the games/play-by-play for one pro sports team.

WTAM/WWWE has owned the play-by-play rights on all 3 pro sports teams for decades (except the Tribe briefly on WKNR 1220). WTAM is a talk station who carries sports at night/weekends.

They've had the 3 teams because most of the time there hasn't been any legitimate competition for those broadcast rites. They will soon have big time local competition for play-by-play rites with deep pockets and a large contingent of sportstalk stations around the country.

Mostly, firming up what we already know.

It's strongly believed that PD Andy Roth is in the Halle Building, or at least has been there, and not just hoping to find men's shoes at a defunct department store.

There's word on the Buffalo board that he came up there for a farewell at Entercom, but he's been here at least part of the week.

Some (including some here) seem to think this thing will launch as soon as Monday. I'm skeptical, but would not be blown over if that happens.

I haven't heard yet, still, if it'll be on 92.3 or 98.5. If that decision happens, it may be one of the few made locally...and as noted numerous times, I've heard virtually nothing out of the Halle Building or One Radio Lane. Everything I've heard has 92.3 on it, if any frequency, but these folks may not realize the signal situation in Cleveland.

I'll be checking both 92.3 and 98.5 all weekend into Monday morning, in case something happens. My gut tells me they still need a little more time, but CBS can put stuff together in a hurry if they need to.

From what I've heard, it will be by Labor Day at the latest. More logical for CBS to make the announcement next week, then start the ramp-up (hiring an actual airstaff, update anchors and beat reporters... not to mention a traffic department, production, promotions, marketing and social networking). It would be night and day in comparison to how V-107.3 was launched, which was a week ahead of schedule... and sure sounded like it.

It also makes sense when considering that, if there is a 92.3-98.5 signal swap in play (and who knows?) it will take time to make the switch a proper one. That's far more complicated than it looks.

It's also possible that "The Fan" launches on August 29 just before the Labor Day weekend. Either way, a launch on August 1 means weeks of preseason Browns talk... and who REALLY wants THAT to launch a sports station? Plus the projected new afternoon host for "The Fan" hasn't left his current gig yet, AFAIK.
