That other "1190"

What does this have to do with Dallas/Ft.Worth?
Simple. If you live in one of the many nulls of the current KFXR 1190, WOWO is the main reason!

Well, yes, but that's only part of the big picture. You can also add these stations to the "protected" list, all on 1190: KXMX Anaheim CA, KNUV Tolleson (Phoenix) AZ, KEX Portland OR, KPHN Kansas City MO, CFSL Weyburn, Saskatchewan and XEWK Guadalajara, Jalisco. That's in addition to WOAI 1200 San Antonio. The stations listed, some of whom have changed call letters over the years, were on the air when the old KLIF built the 12-tower nighttime array near Rockwall. Over the years things have changed on the frequency, with a lot more stations being given nighttime authorization, so like we've discussed before it would it would be really tough for KFXR to do any kind of meaningful nighttime upgrade now.

I recall hearing WOWO in Irving early one Sunday morning under KLIF when they were still using the 1,000-watt site on Scyene Road. I thought that was pretty cool at the time, and I think the "history of WOWO" is pretty interesting, too.

That is impressive, considering WOWO never has sent much signal to the southwest. The story of what happened to that station is a real shame.

Well, I should explain that it was for just a short while and it was because WOWO had just switched to their daytime non-directional pattern. Their sunrise was a little earlier than Dallas at the time. Maybe I just happened to be in the right spot because back then and now, for that matter, the most likely suspect underneath KFXR is XEWK.

There's a parallel to the story of the downgrade, but with an even more tragic end. Like the owners of WLIB neutered WOWO, another New York station, WINS wanted to expand their nighttime signal so they killed KLRA 1010 in Little Rock. With 10,000 watts day/5,000 night it was arguably the city's best AM signal.
