That station in Manor

This is looking more trouble as time goes on. KTXW 1120 isn't on the air but they're not content with the prospect of running flea power from a directional array that would throw the signal mainly west and northeast. I noticed today that the FCC has received a revised application from them, this time calling for a power increase from 430 to 5,600 watts daytime. Now despite what the application says, I can only say that this one looks flawed. The proposed pattern is here, if you'll scroll down to page 46: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS...?appn=101405437&qnum=5110&copynum=1&exhcnum=1

Supposedly the signal strength measurements for stations on 1110 checked out all right, along with 1130, showing no prohibited overlap either caused or received. I agree, begrudgingly, that 1110 looks fine. But the other day in south Austin I got a "seek-stopping" signal in the car from San Antonio's KTMR 1130, indicating to me that not only is this tight but also that it really might not work at all.

And why try to add another AM to the Austin market which aside from KLBJ-AM is generally an FM-only kinda place? In fact, why try to build an AM station anywhere these days?

Makes me wonder what format is missing in Austin that would allow the owners to pay back their expenses to construct and operate the station.

Yes ... very curious what they would want to play on this station. Does the owner have a track record elsewhere?

Probally Religious, or Spanish language format. Time Brokered Ethnic, maybe? Wouldn't be Austin's first time brokered Ethnic (like they do with several Houston AM Radio Stations)

It was mentioned some time back that KTXW might become an affiliate of W Radio, a news-talk network operated by Grupo Latino de Radio. (Besides XEW Mexico City there are GLR affiliates all around Mexico, including 690 AM Tijuana.) If that happens it might make programming sense to some degree, but I agree with the previous statements about AM in general. Trying to get 1120 going has been a real hassle and you've got to wonder if this money pit could ever pay off.

Spanish News-Talk just hasn't taken off in the U.S.
W Radio in Tijuana-- despite its monster signal on the old XETRA 690-- has yet to make any inroads in San Diego or LA. And the old KCOR in San Antonio is just a shadow of its old self doing Spanish news talk. I think the problem is they count too heavily on syndicated shows and don't have the local news and local talk shows to connect with the local audience.

That's certainly a good point. At least with some formats and audiences it still matters whether you're live and local, I guess.

Considering the ownership of the station there's another possibility, Vietnamese, following the lead of Radio Saigon in Houston and Dallas.

The saga of 1120 in Austin goes back to the early 1980's when a construction permit was issued for KTCO, which never made it on the air. Not sure if the current CP holder has any relationship to the earlier effort.
