That was quick! Displaced Montville XLater Moves

That only took about a month...

CT Christian Radio Outreach translator W235AJ was displaced off 94.9 for WJJF. They were approved to move to 103.3, and I noticed tonight that they're on 103.3 in mono. I got them great on Route 85 in Waterford along the Crystal Mall, and north on I-395 until northern Norwich, where it starts to mix with WODS Boston.

Maybe Scott of Mike F. can help me with this: How was the translator able to apply for and get approval to move from 94.9 to 103.3? It's not 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or IF. Does it have something to do with the displacement?

Yup. A translator displaced by a full-power station can apply to move to any open channel.

And most lower power systems these days are wideband. They'd just have to replace the bandpass filter, if they had one.

One of my Cape clients is 5KW and could in theory go anywhere on the band with just a few button pushes (antenna included). Just that pesky channel filter in the way.

I wish that stupid WFAR Translator on 97.9 would move or go off the air. It kills 97.9 ESPN's signal in Wolcott and Waterbury (and parts of Southington).

I wish their stupid translator on 104.9 in Bridgeport would do likewise! It obliterates the coverage of WIHS beginning in Milford/Stratford! >:[

Someone told me Clear Channel should be able to have the WFAR translator removed from 97.9 to protect it's new Hartford signal. True?

If they can show that it's causing interference to their listeners, not a problem. All they need to do is collect complaints of interference, then take it to the FCC. In fact, 97.9 ESPN is already collecting complaints of interference on their website with a huge ol' banner:

Now THAT is interesting... but what can be done when the x-lator has been there for more than a decade? I suspect "not much".

I also wonder about "inciting" listeners to complain... don't those complaints have to be "unsolicited"?

No, the complaints don't have to be unsolicited. There are dozens of examples, but the most well-known current example is that of translator W292DV bouncing around New York City on 106.3, which keeps getting shut down by interference complaints from listeners of WKMK in New Jersey. Solicited complaints are just fine.

As for the translator, as soon as ANY complaint of interference to a full-power station comes in, it must cease operations immediately until the interference is resolved (read: translator moves.) Translators (and LPFM's) are secondary services, and must protect full power class A, B, C etc. stations... Even if those stations move or sign on well after the translator. Contours don't matter here, either.

Translator W250AA will have no option but to drop power, move off the channel, or cease operations. It doesn't matter how old the license is.
